We recently had the chance to connect with Phillip Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Phillip, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What battle are you avoiding?
Avoiding The thoughts of business failing. Trying to build something in a town where majority of people don’t look like me is draining to see. The fact that every culture looks out for themselves no matter the cost or what can be benefitial to the community.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
“Hey everyone, I’m Phillip Williams, the creator of Prime Example. I am a 35 year old African-American male that was raised in South Bay San Diego, CA. I created Prime Example to be a community brand dedicated to local individuals a safe haven in the community for services like fitness/sports training, photography work, co-opt space, content creation & support and much more. Prime Example is all about showing growth in all facets in your life as you persue whatever it is you seem to enjoy. Black representaion and support is non existant in the South Bay and I want to be one of few to have a growing black affortable bussiness down in the forgotten area of town. I am actively searching for generous donors that would love to see a positive business to uplift all kinds of people no matter race,gender, sexual orientation or religion.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
As an athletic person over the years, I tangled with serving alot of my time on the football field. I played international football from 2012-2024 and I just feel in order to grow a real business i must sacrifice the one thing that made me feel important and worthy. One of the hardest things to realize living as a low income society is that saving for a goal is very difficult and with traveling to play football all the time the effort to reach my financial goal has suffered.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Becoming a general stereotype is a major fear i know was on my mind forever. being a succesful black man based on how i was raised or positive life lessons has taught me to stay the course no matter what others say or doubt about you. Ive walked these streets majority of my life and seen alot of negative actions with people that look like me, so i refuse to be something i know my grandmother would not be proud of.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire many different people from family members to entreprnuers that has similar backgrounds that has morals and humility when it comes to life. if they built something that inspires or help people that is my main people that i admire.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Not persuing this business to the fullest. Not many people can understand why I want this buti do not want to quit on something i put my hard earned money, time, and mind power behind. Dispite the unsupportive nature of people when it comes to someone who looks like me in the city, I still want to o into overdrive to make my childhood dream come true.
