Good morning D, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Pure chaos. I shoot straight up after getting a few hours of horrible sleep in an anxiety induced panic thinking im late to something. Then realize I have 10-15 more minutes of sleep if I wanted. Then I re-wake up with only 10-15 minutes before im supposed to leave the house. Once im out the door I consider if I still have time to grab coffee. Something like that usually.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Im D Benzo, a tattoo artist here in San Diego for the last 15 years. I specialize in black and grey/realism tattoos. When i’m not taking long walks along the beach admiring the sunset and taking photos of my dog at golden hour, im usually painting or looking for inspiration. I think what makes me unique is that i’m 5’6 in a sea of tall tattoo artists which I believe gives me a pretty unique perspective. If I can quote Confucius “One who is not here for a long time, is looking for a good time.” Something like that. Call me.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I think I have built a lot of walls to protect myself from emotions. Giving myself permission to start to break these barriers down has allowed me to grow mentally and accepting that im allowed to feel things other than sadness and rage is ok. Like gas making you bloated, if you hold it in and do not release it can weigh heavy on the soul. Just fart dude. Just fart.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think we all look at success differently. If I look back on life things can be worse and id say im pretty successful in some ways today. On the other hand the suffering I had to endure to get there has definitely defined me and made those little success’ feel like victories. There is no worthy success with out some suffering.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The tattoo industry is dying! I believe its just having some growing pains. Tattooing as an art form has been around forever and will continue to be. Although its as popular now as its ever been, with the amount of people tattooing or trying to tattoo mixed with how the economy is at the moment, you’re definitely going to see some artists incomes change or beginners struggle. Tattooing in some form will always be here the question is how many artists are going to stick around? Does anyone still have doge coin?

I live in California. Lets be real, it would take me being immortal working the rest of my life to even buy a house thats larger the 600sq feet. Now if I were immortal with unlimited funds! Id build homes for all the orphans of the world, id adopt all the dogs, house the house-less, build organizations to feed the hungry, fund sciences to cure diseases, grant all the hospice people their wishes. Shoot, id even build a building for ants!
