Jonathan Biermann of Pacific Beach on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jonathan Biermann . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are intentionally set aside for meditation, grounding, and breathwork. These practices are essential to my process as an artist, helping me slow down, clear mental noise, and become fully present. By beginning each morning with stillness and awareness, I create the focus and clarity needed to approach my work with patience, intention, and a deeper connection to both my environment and subject.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jonathan Biermann, a self-taught wildlife photographer based in San Diego, California, the artist behind californiabrownpelican.com. My work centers on the local brown pelicans. I currently have a photography exhibition at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard, California. On view from November 13th, 2025, through March 2026.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Strangers, often through brief encounters or encouragement, saw clarity and purpose in my path before I fully recognized it on my own.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Some days you get the candy and some days you get the wrapper.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They’d say what matters to me is time, unrushed moments in nature, slow mornings, and the steady companionship of pelicans, where creativity unfolds without force, and connection happens naturally.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Out in nature, preferably around hundreds of brown pelicans.
