Rising Stars: Meet Michael Gi of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gi.

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Michael Gi is a singer/preacher/teacher of the word of God, and is a freelance voice over talent based in San Diego CA. Originally from St. Louis MO, Michael was formerly managed by the late William (Bill) “Pop’s” Isles II, a member, and co-pioneer of the world renowned R&B group, the O’Jays. Michael has been singing and performing since the age of 5 when his mother [the late MaryHelen Wilford; a gospel in her own right] stood him on a box in church so that the people could see him as well as hear him. Upon opening his mouth -comments were made about him that he was truly a young soul with an old anointing! Throughout his journeys in delivering the gospel in song, he has been mentored by the O’Jays, the O’Neal Twins, Shirley Caesar, the Imperials, Russell Thompkins Jr. of the Stylistics, the Temptations, and Little Richard to name a few. Known for his ‘Soul- Gospel-Spirit-filled’ style approach to singing, he has the potential in becoming one of the industries brightest recording artists in gospel music. Michael Gi presents a smooth melodic and soulful voice flavored with a hard and raspy second and first tenor cover-tone. His soulfully sweet sounds are topped off with his dramatic style of delivery only to be framed with a dynamic display of his visual delivery of any song. Hearing and observing this young man, has brought many audiences to enjoy this mid-western born singer. Those that have been fortunate enough to witness his programs leave with not just a song, but a blessed experience! As a tribute to the O’Jays, and the people of God, he released his debut gospel single, ‘A Prayer of Peace’ on June 30, 2025. A song that was originally recorded by the O’Jays. Then, he released a second single on October 24, 2025 entitled “I’m a Child of The King”. A song originally written in the 1800s, but later revised by Rev. Marvin Yancy in the ’70’s, now reimagined by Michael Gi today. Being passed-over by a few record labels, and instead of waiting to be so-called discovered… Michael decided to take matters into his own hands. To date, he has started two companies to aid in putting out the music that he has recorded. The two singles have been released under D&D Records of San Diego. In addition, Michael has teamed up with Devine Jamz Gospel Network to promote his music to the masses. With Devine Jamz’s efforts, Michael Gi has hit the DRT Global Top 100 Independent Airplay Chart, the DRT Global Top 5o Gospel/Inspirational Airplay Chart, and a 2-Time Top 30 National Independent Gospel Airplay Charts. He is currently working on a live presentation, which will be announced soon. Michael Gi is yet striving to share with those who want to proclaim in song -that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of their lives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the most frustrating thing along my journey was to listen to others pre-judge me as an artist. Throughout my career as a singer, performer, and servant of the people regarding music. I’ve either been told how I should feel, or how I should sing, or how I should look as I pursued my dream of delivering the gifts that God has given me. However, it was at a very young age that God’s word came to me by the way of Proverbs 18:16 -“A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
According to my Mom, I’ve been singing since the age of 3, and been publicly performing since the age of 5. Mom made sure that music became an important part of my life. She took care to mentor and train me in how to be a performer and connect with those that are listening and watching me. Mom encouraged me to study physical instruments as well. I took lessons in violin, viola, and clarinet during my grade school years. And vocal music and presentation during my high school years by Mr. Larry Wade, Vocal Music Instructor. In addition, at my local church I was also honored to be mentored by Sis Pearl Reed… one of the most talented pianist, and singers that I have had the pleasure of being schooled by. I began to indulge in writing and arranging for choirs during my enlistment in the US Marine Corps. My tours of duty allowed me to travel extensively overseas where I started and assisted with building and directing youth choirs. I am an engineer and IT Computer Repair Specialist by trade (thanks to the Marines). Therefore, as the Marine Corps Engineer motto is “I am a jack-of-all-trades, and master of none” (ha-ha). I specialize in communication. I am also a youth coach in various sports (basketball, baseball, football, etc.). So, I get a thrill to see a kid whom I have coached in the past (now an adult) come up to me and say, “Hi Coach!” My own children (now adults) have to tell me who the kid was, and where did I coach him, and what grade. I think what sets me apart from others is that I actually believe that everyone can sing… I just don’t believe that everyone has the same ear of listening (ha-ha).

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Briefly, I believe there are different levels of “Risk-Taking”. Since I was in the United States Marines, my level in my view was somewhat extensive. However, I think that each individual must weigh what they believe is “Risk-Taking” and how it would affect their lives and well-being.
