Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Herber.
Hi Alexandria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Poppy & Hawthorn came to life shortly after I had my daughter, during a time when I was navigating life as a new single mom and searching for a way to stay home with her while still paying the bills. One day, a friend was over and showed me an Instagram page featuring handmade charcuterie boxes, and I remember thinking, that looks like fun—I feel like I could do that! From there, I started brainstorming business names with my sister and never looked back. The name Poppy & Hawthorn is inspired by our birth flowers—a poppy and a hawthorn—which made it feel even more personal from the start. Through a lot of trial and error and many learning moments along the way, we finally found our style and watched the business start to grow. We still have a long way to go, but we’re excited and hopeful that this year will be our biggest yet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth ride, as much as every business owner wishes it could be. I went into this business completely blind, without really knowing what I was doing or what to expect. I had never started a business before, so there was no way to fully prepare for the challenges that came along. There were times when people asked questions I didn’t yet have answers to, decisions I had to figure out on the fly, and moments where I learned through mistakes rather than experience. Each challenge pushed me to grow, adapt, and learn as I went, shaping both the business and me into what we are today.
We’ve been impressed with Poppy & Hawthorn, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Poppy & Hawthorn creates beautifully curated charcuterie boards and boxes that bring people together over good food and thoughtful presentation. We specialize in crafting personalized spreads that are as visually stunning as they are delicious, perfect for celebrations, gatherings, or just treating yourself. We’re especially excited about our new charcuterie cart, which brings a unique, interactive experience to events, as well as our seasonal and holiday-themed offerings that make any occasion feel extra special. What sets us apart is the care, creativity, and personal touch we put into every order—our boards are more than just food; they’re an experience designed to delight the senses. We’re most proud of how our brand reflects our story as a small, family-inspired business that grew from passion and perseverance. At Poppy & Hawthorn, we want our clients to know that each board and experience is made with intention, love, and a commitment to quality, helping make every moment special and memorable.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned through all of this is to trust in myself and my business, and to remember that not everything has to be perfect. Growth doesn’t come from having all the answers—it comes from showing up, learning along the way, and doing the best we can with what we have. At the end of the day, that’s exactly what we’re doing: our best.
