Conversations with Evelyn Castillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Castillo.

Hi Evelyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Evelyn Maricella Castillo. I am 26 years old, born and raised in South San Diego.
Growing up, I lived a very isolated life. I craved creativity and expression as a way to understand the world around me , just not with words. Words never felt like enough.
When I learned how to paint my face, my world changed. Through makeup, I could finally show people how I felt inside without saying a single word ,just through the image of who I chose to be.
Makeup gave me that power. It taught me that I am not alone, that there are so many like-minded souls in my community who also long to express what lives beneath the surface.
My love for expression eventually became my love for clowns. At their core, these eccentric beings exist to create emotion in whatever room they perform in. Joy, discomfort, curiosity, sadness ,they hold space for it all.
There is a Turkish saying: “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace instead becomes a circus.”
To me, the sad clown represents something deeper. They embody the internal battles that generations are taught to carry quietly , to weep in silence, to remain strong, to continue on without making others uncomfortable with the despair they feel inside.
The painted smile becomes armor.
The performance becomes survival.
And somewhere between the two, truth lives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I grew up feeling deeply alone, carrying emotions I didn’t have the courage or confidence to express. I struggled to understand what was happening around me, let alone explain what was happening inside me. For a long time, I felt small , defined by my fears, my overthinking, and the weight of how others perceived me.
With no real sense of support, I had to teach myself how to break through the mental walls I built to survive. I had to learn, slowly and painfully, that I am more than my thoughts and more than the doubts placed on me.
But every mental block I’ve faced has also been proof that I’m still striving , still evolving and still fighting to become the person I know I’m meant to be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a makeup artist devoted to the art of the clown… not as costume, but as transformation.
In a world that teaches us to refine, conceal, and conform, I choose exaggeration. I choose color. I choose the bold poetry of a painted face! Through the love of makeup, I create space for people to step outside expectation and into expansion. The clown is not a disguise, it is a revelation, the highest form of self expression.
Down to history the pierrot embodied aching vulnerability, while harlequin celebrated chaos, wit, and rebellion. The clown has always mirrored humanity in its most honest, amplified form. I carry that history forward , honoring both tenderness and foolishness , sorrow and show.
What sets me apart as a makeup artist specializing in clown art is intention.
While traditional beauty makeup often seeks symmetry, correction, perfection and enhancement, my work seeks expression. I do not paint to perfect, I paint to release . Each face becomes a canvas for emotional truth. Each design is a collaboration between identity and imagination.
Clowning allows adults to see that inner child again . It gives permission to be loud, strange, soft, dramatic, joyful, grotesque, radiant , and mournful all at once. The mask does not hide,it reveals. In wearing it, my clients step into a version of themselves no longer bound by social restraint. This is not costume. This is courage.
Through color, line, and exaggeration, I offer transformation, and the freedom that comes from straying beautifully from the norm.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love Pinterest , at times having a creative block is normal. Putting together a mood board or inspiration board is a great way for me to choose a topic and create magic !
