Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Obermiller.
Hi Jake, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Yeah, hey everyone! I’m Jake Obermiller, the lead singer and songwriter of the alternative/emo duo “subtitles.”
I’ve been an artist in one form or another for the past 15 years, gradually taking it more serious and honing my craft as the years went on. I traveled across 5 states from Illinois to, now, Arizona over the past 11 years and have been involved in about every form of music/art, as well as every kind of labor job that you could think of in an attempt to fund this unquenchable habit… “music.”
From Rap, to DJ’ing and producing dubstep, to sad boy indie music… and finally leading to my lifetime passion project, subtitles. This is the kind of music I grew up on and have always loved, but never gave a chance until I met Alex, my brother, duo partner, and drummer. We are now approaching our debut album release after three grueling years of brand building, skype calls, long trips, and a ton of devotion to the project.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In some ways, absolutely! The project subtitles. is absolutely my dream project, and to have someone who works so well with me and has the exact same mindset for what it should and could become is an absolute godsend. It has it’s ups and downs, mainly Alex living in France and having to travel and do a ton of backend stuff to make small growth with the band, but I couldn’t ask for a better direction or partner.
That being said, has the whole road been smooth? Definitely not. I’m sure you can tell from the music we make, but we definitely carry a ton of weight into the lyrics of our songs and that is all rooted in truth. This upcoming album is a window into a lot of the struggles I’ve personally faced through the years from addiction to loss of close friends and family.
All of that to say, I wouldn’t trade it for the world because it now allows me to speak on these things and hopefully help someone else going through the same thing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I wouldn’t personally say that I’m known for my vocal talent yet, but I can absolutely boast on my songwriting ability. From clever rap songs, to heartfelt emotional bedroom pop, to now extremely authentic emo/alternative music, all of these songs have been 100% written by me, from the soul. If I’m ever able to catch my vocal abilities up to the writing, I have no doubt this band will become a household name.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has always been a difficult thing for me to scale.
On one hand, I live in a time where i’m able to create my art and put it out to the world, and in a way that sounds exactly like it does in my head. I have food on my plate every night from the work I do. I have a great friendship with my drummer and have felt love for people in my life.
On the other hand, I have never won a sweepstakes. Ever.
