Kendene, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with infertility began with what I thought would be a simple step into motherhood. Like many women, I assumed it would happen naturally, but instead, I found myself facing unexpected challenges that tested my faith, patience, and identity.
After trying for many years to have a baby without success, I was referred to Dr. V. Gabriel Garzo at Reproductive Partners Fertility Center in San Diego for fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilization (IVF). That season of my life was filled with doctor’s appointments, emotional highs and lows, and moments where hope felt both strong and fragile at the same time. There were times I questioned why this was my path, but I kept moving forward.
A turning point in my journey was when I had my first appointment with Dr. Garzo. He’s a man of integrity, 100%, and his compassion, dedication, and commitment to his patients truly set him apart. He didn’t just treat me as another case, but with care, dignity, and genuine hope. Having a doctor who believed in the process, and in me, made all the difference during such a vulnerable time.
Through perseverance, faith, and the support of my medical team, I was eventually blessed with twin daughters. Becoming their mother transformed everything – the pain, the waiting, and the uncertainty all became part of a greater story that I now carry with purpose.
Today, I can use my experience to encourage other women experiencing infertility, reminding them that they are not alone and that their story still holds meaning, even in the waiting.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was far from a smooth road. This was in the early 1990s, long before insurance provided any help for fertility treatments. The cost of IVF was overwhelming. I worked two jobs just to afford it, and it took everything out of me at times. The injections, the appointments, the uncertainty, and the constant emotional weight of “what if” were enough to break anyone’s spirit. But when I think back now, those challenges also strengthened my resilience and deepened my faith in ways I never expected. I would do it all again because what I gained in the end was worth every sacrifice.
Infertility is deeper than just a physical challenge. There were moments of deep disappointment, especially after treatments didn’t go as planned. The waiting, the uncertainty, and the constant cycle of hope and heartbreak were incredibly difficult. There’s also a quiet loneliness that can come with infertility. You celebrate the pregnancies of your friends and acquaintances both planned and unplanned, while silently grieving your own unanswered prayers. It can make you feel isolated, even in a room full of people.
How do you think about luck?
I believe my journey was not about luck but about faith. There were certainly moments that could be seen as fortunate – finding the right doctor, having access to treatment, and the outcome of my IVF journey – but I view those as blessings, not luck. It was all about perseverance but also divine alignment. And it’s about the promise that even the longest seasons of waiting can end in joy. As tiring as it was physically, emotionally, and spiritually, I never let go of the desire in my heart. Something in me kept believing that motherhood was meant to be part of my story. Everything changed the day my OB/GYN recommended Dr. Garzo and the caring specialists at Reproductive Partners Fertility Center in San Diego.
Looking back, my infertility journey shaped me deeply. It strengthened my faith, taught me perseverance, and showed me the power of support. It also taught me that people will always have opinions, some supportive, some hurtful, but your journey belongs to you alone. If you are trying for a baby, just hold on, you are a mom. Just a future one.
