Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Dudley.
Hi Cassie , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
If you had told Brett and me eight years ago that we’d be running one of San Diego’s largest meal prep companies, we probably wouldn’t have believed you. Pure Meal Prep wasn’t something we set out to build, it grew organically from a passion project that turned into a business almost overnight.
Brett is a self-taught chef who worked his way through some of San Diego’s fine dining kitchens, gaining nearly two decades of culinary experience along the way. I also spent more than 15 years in the restaurant industry, managing and working front of house, and funnily enough, that’s actually where we met and fell in love. Looking back, hospitality has always been a huge part of both of our lives, even before we realized we’d one day build a business together.
Back in 2017, he was on his own health journey and became frustrated with what healthy eating looked like. Most meal prep options felt repetitive, bland, and uninspiring. He believed healthy food shouldn’t feel like a sacrifice, and with his culinary background, he knew there had to be a better way. So he started creating meals that tasted like something you’d order at a great restaurant while still supporting a healthy lifestyle.
While Brett was creating the meals, I naturally started sharing photos of them on Instagram because I thought they looked too good not to share. Before long, friends, family, and complete strangers started sending us messages asking, “Can I order these too?” Those messages kept coming, and eventually we realized we weren’t just sharing recipes anymore, we had stumbled onto a real need in our community.
That’s how Pure Meal Prep SD was born.
What started with a handful of customers quickly grew through word of mouth and social media. Every week we focused on making the food even better, listening to customer feedback, and creating an experience that people genuinely looked forward to. Looking back, Instagram opened the first door for us, but our customers are the reason we’ve continued to grow. Their trust, referrals, and support transformed a small passion project into the business we have today.
Today, we’re proud to prepare thousands of meals every week for customers across San Diego County. I’m grateful that Brett and I get to combine our strengths every day, he leads our culinary team and continues creating restaurant-quality meals, while I focus on managing operations, marketing and building relationships within our community.
The biggest lesson this journey has taught us is that sometimes the best businesses aren’t the ones you carefully plan for years, they’re the ones that grow naturally because you’re solving a problem people genuinely have. We’ve stayed committed to our original mission of making healthy eating exciting, convenient, and something people actually look forward to. Even as we’ve grown, that’s never changed, and it’s still what motivates us every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think every challenge has helped shape who we are as business owners.
In the beginning, like so many entrepreneurs, we wore every hat imaginable. We cooked, packaged meals, answered customer emails, made deliveries, handled marketing, managed finances, and learned as we went. As demand grew, one of our biggest challenges became figuring out how to scale without sacrificing the quality and hospitality that our customers had come to expect.
One of the biggest turning points for us was building the right team. Because Brett and I both spent years in San Diego’s restaurant industry, we had the opportunity to reconnect with incredibly talented chefs and hospitality professionals we’d worked alongside throughout our careers. Watching those relationships come full circle and building what truly feels like our dream team has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. Having people we trust to execute Brett’s foodie vision with the same level of care and consistency every week has been invaluable.
People often ask what it’s like to own a business with your spouse, and honestly, that’s one area where we’ve been incredibly fortunate. Working together has always been one of our greatest strengths. We each have our own lane, Brett leads the culinary side of the business while I oversee operations, marketing, and the day-to-day business functions, and we genuinely trust each other to do what we do best.
Our successes are shared, and so are our challenges. When something goes well, we celebrate together. When something doesn’t go as planned, we work through it together. Neither of us is standing on the sidelines, we’re experiencing every high and every low as a team. I think that’s one of the reasons our partnership has worked so well, both in business and in marriage.
If there’s one thing this journey has taught us, it’s that resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges it’s about learning from them, adapting, and continuing to move forward without losing sight of the reason you started in the first place.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At its core, Pure Meal Prep is about changing the way people think about healthy eating.
When most people hear the words “meal prep,” they picture bland chicken, plain rice, and food they have to force themselves to eat. We set out to challenge that idea from day one. Our goal has always been to create meals that are as exciting and flavorful as something you’d order at one of your favorite restaurants while still helping people reach their health goals.
Every week, our culinary team creates a brand-new menu inspired by seasonal ingredients and restaurant-quality cooking techniques. We never wanted our customers to feel like they were eating the same thing week after week. Variety, flavor, and quality have always been at the heart of what we do.
At Pure Meal Prep, our mission has always been simple: make healthy eating something people genuinely look forward to instead of something they feel like they have to do.
I think what makes us different is that we don’t believe healthy food should fit into one category or one style of cooking. Our menu changes every single week because our chefs are constantly drawing inspiration from different cultures, seasonal ingredients, and the foods they’re most excited to create. One week you might find Mediterranean dishes, the next week Cajun seafood, authentic Asian-inspired meals, classic American comfort food with a healthier twist, or vibrant Mexican flavors. We never wanted meal prep to feel repetitive, and I think that’s one of the biggest reasons our customers continue to come back week after week.
Our goal has never been to simply deliver healthy food. We want every meal to feel like something you’d be excited to order at your favorite local restaurant—just made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients and designed to fit into a healthier lifestyle. We believe convenience shouldn’t mean compromising on flavor, creativity, or quality.
What I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve built within our community. We’re a family-owned San Diego business, and every meal that leaves our kitchen represents our name and our values. Whether someone has been ordering from us for years or is trying us for the very first time, we want them to feel the same level of care, consistency, and hospitality that inspired us to start this company.
Beyond the meals themselves, I hope people see that Pure Meal Prep is really about giving people more freedom. We help busy professionals, parents, healthcare workers, first responders, teachers, athletes, and entrepreneurs spend less time planning, shopping, cooking, and cleaning so they can spend more time doing the things they love. If we can help someone eat better, reduce a little stress, and make healthy living feel more enjoyable instead of overwhelming, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to do.
As we’ve grown, we’ve stayed committed to continually raising the bar, not only through the quality of our food, but through the experience we create for our customers and the relationships we’ve built throughout San Diego. At the end of the day, we don’t just want to be known as a meal prep company. We want to be known as a company that genuinely cares about people and brings excitement back to healthy eating.
How do you think about luck?
Personally, I’ve never viewed our journey as a matter of luck. Looking back, there have certainly been moments where everything seemed to fall into place at just the right time, but I’ve always seen those moments as God’s guidance rather than good fortune.
Our faith has been a constant foundation throughout this journey. There have been countless decisions, challenges, and crossroads where Brett and I have prayed for wisdom, peace, and direction. Running a business comes with a lot of uncertainty, and having faith has helped us stay grounded, especially during seasons when the path forward wasn’t always clear.
That said, I also believe faith and hard work go hand in hand. We’ve poured years of dedication into this business, worked long hours, continued learning, listened to our customers, and genuinely cared about every person we’ve had the opportunity to serve. I don’t think success comes from simply hoping things work out—it comes from showing up consistently, doing your best, treating people with kindness and integrity, and trusting that the results will follow.
One belief that’s always stayed with me is that when you lead with generosity, honesty, and genuine care for others, those things have a way of coming back to you. We’ve been incredibly blessed by loyal customers, an amazing team, and a community that has supported us from the very beginning. I don’t take any of that for granted.
So while someone else might call it luck, I see it as a combination of God’s grace, a lot of hard work, and people choosing to believe in what we’re building. For that, we will always be grateful.
