Today we’d like to introduce you to Yana Matosian.
Yana, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been passionate about cultivating a beautiful aesthetic in my life. I just didn’t realize that I could translate that passion into a career until 7 years ago. I didn’t study photography in college, but I always loved taking pictures. My first DSLR, however, transformed my hobby into my passion. Starting from trial and error, I developed my own aesthetic that employs natural light to highlight the subject’s simple and natural beauty. Over time, my career has centered on capturing the pure, everyday joys of families, kiddos and soon-to-be moms for those living in and visiting San Diego.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Light is essential to my work. It functions as a tool, an aesthetic and a metaphor. The natural light from the sun just before sundown is my go-to tool for its rich, golden tones. This light highlights and softens my subject(s), enhancing their own natural beauty. Often my subjects are photographed within nature, reinforcing the beauty of the simple and natural. Added to this, is my passion to capture what’s real: genuine smiles, love and emotions. I suppose that the message of my work is also my greatest inspiration: that the best of us, notwithstanding our imperfections, is always present if we allow ourselves to be authentic and see the love and light in those around us.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I love connecting with other photographers through Instagram. This forum has allowed me to meet true friends, as well as become a regular source of inspiration.
