Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Lowery.
Hi Diane, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is centered around my relationship with Jesus Christ. My faith is paramount to who I am and everything that I do.
I was raised in a beautiful Christian home with wonderful parents and siblings. As a young girl (5 years old), I asked Jesus to come into my little heart. At the age of 12, I gave my life to Him. By the time I was 19 years old, I was married, and within 11 years, we had a family of two sons. Devastatingly, the American dream was shattered, and we suffered through a heartbreaking divorce. The results left me spiraling into six years of drug abuse. Even after I was able to walk away from the life-crushing cycle, my relationship with Christ would not be restored for another 14 years—twenty years of not enjoying the “abundant life” I had understood in my youth.
In 2007, I rededicated my life to Christ. Eventually, the pastor of the church I attended asked me to lead a women’s Bible study, and in December of 2008 I started with just 5 women. We all wanted a community of like-minded women who wanted to know more about God and His Word. The group grew, and after 13 years, I had read, studied, and taught through the entire Bible. What I learned changed my life and my perspective on everything I thought, said, and did. It led me to write a series of five books. Views From the Balcony, Things I’ve Seen, Things I’ve Learned. Views From the Balcony, A Seeker Finds Grace, Views From the Balcony, A Seeker Finds Riches, Views From the Balcony, A Seeker Finds Joy, Views From the Balcony, A Seeker Finds Purpose.
In the midst of this project, I was offered a dormant Christian women’s nonprofit organization. As God would have it, I was surrounded by knowledgeable professional women who joined me in resurrecting it to what it is today: Women at the Well – San Diego.
This nonprofit has focused on coming alongside broken women in the San Diego community, specifically at the San Diego Rescue Mission, where I serve as a chaplain and Bible teacher to students in the transformative program, Mission Academy. Helping to change homelessness one heart at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is smooth. I have had two successful businesses with my husband: a women’s clothing operation and Lowery’s Hot Glass in Old Town San Diego, which we owned and operated for twenty-five years. (We closed in 2020 because of COVID) And I retired at age 70 to focus on this ministry.
Success comes by being mission-minded, and every decision made needs to reflect efforts to fulfill the mission. It’s passion, intention, and good old self-discipline.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most known for my passion for Scripture and my desire to share what I have learned with others. I do this because I know that it is life-changing. In a world full of people who don’t know who they are, why they are alive, and what they are supposed to do with their lives, I have found that God has the solid answers to every one of these questions and more. It has nothing to do with religion, rituals, self-righteousness, or being good enough. It has everything to do with humbly seeing yourself in relation to your creator and settling things His way.
I don’t know that anything “sets me apart’ from others in my field. I just show up and do the best I can one day at a time.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Yes. No matter who you are or what you do, know your mission statement in life and have a board of directors in your life who can hold you accountable and keep your feet on the right path.
