Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Lisa Klein.
Dr. Lisa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For more than 20 years, I’ve been a pediatrician, and throughout my career I noticed the same pattern over and over. Parents were comfortable asking about ear infections and fevers, but when it came to puberty, body changes, or sex, they often didn’t know where to start. In the exam room, I’d ask, “Has your child started puberty yet?” and was almost always met with a nervous look and, “I have no idea!”
At the same time, my mom-friends were constantly asking me for advice about puberty and parenting tweens. I realized families needed practical, trustworthy guidance outside of a quick doctor’s visit, so I founded Turning Teen.
Today, Turning Teen is a national pediatrician-led education company helping families, schools, and organizations navigate puberty and growing up with confidence (and a little humor). I’m proud to work alongside an incredible team of Turning Teen pediatricians serving families in San Diego, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas–Fort Worth, and Orlando, with more communities to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most business owners, I have encountered some challenging moments. I built Turning Teen while working as a pediatrician and raising two boys. There were plenty of late nights, early mornings, and moments where I questioned whether I could do it all.
One of the biggest challenges has been growing a business that tackles topics many people still find uncomfortable. Talking about puberty and sex can feel awkward, but I’ve learned that once my mission is understood, those conversations become easier and incredibly empowering.
Over the past 11 years, Turning Teen has continued to grow primarily through word of mouth. We listen closely to the needs of families and evolve our programs along the way to meet their needs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Turning Teen?
Turning Teen was created to give families the kind of education and support I wished every parent and child could receive – not just during a yearly doctor’s visit – but before, during, and throughout the tween and teen years.
What truly sets us apart is that every puberty workshop is created and taught by practicing pediatricians. Participants receive evidence-based medical information delivered in a fun, relatable, and judgment-free way that encourages questions and conversations. Our other workshops are taught be outstanding certified leaders in their fields.
We offer a variety of classes, including: puberty education for tweens, comprehensive sex education, parent workshops, and body image and emotional wellness programs. We present workshops as part of school curriculums, small private group classes, sports team presentations, community events, and workplace lunch-and-learns. Whether we’re speaking to a classroom of fifth graders, a room full of parents, or employees at a corporate event, our goal is always the same: to help people feel more informed, more confident, and less alone in navigating these important conversations.
The thing I’m most proud of is hearing people say, “I wish Turning Teen existed when I was growing up.”
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t wait for everything to be perfect – you’ll never start. My first workshops looked very different than they do today because I wasn’t afraid to make changes along the way. I’d also encourage people to invest back into their business. Over the years we’ve continually updated our curriculum, rebranded, redesigned our website, expanded our team, and looked for new ways to better serve families. One lesson I didn’t expect was how important it is to build a community of fellow entrepreneurs. I truly couldn’t have grown Turning Teen without networking with other women in business who generously shared ideas, celebrated wins, offered encouragement, and reminded me that I wasn’t building a business alone. Most importantly, build something you truly believe in.
