Today we’d like to introduce you to Joannie Lee.
Hi Joannie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started massage school in 2002. When I started school, I realized that I was a kinesthetic learner and loved helping people through their pain. After school, I began working in a Holistic Health Center in PB and a chiropractic office. I then walked into the wonderful world of SPA and loved it! I enjoyed the “spa extras” of taking care of clients and making sure they felt like I heard and helped them. In 2008, I experienced my first recession- the financial crisis/stock market crash. I sat at the Spa and no one came in. I still had rent and bills to pay, so I decided to focus on a target market and hired a co-worker from the Spa. Within a few months, I was busier in my private practice than the Spa. I continued to focus on my private practice and worked part time at the Spa. Slowly, I left the Spa and continued to hire more massage therapists! I did a rebrand multiple times and stuck with Two Hands Wellness Events where we offer more than just massage. We also provide yoga, sound healing and facials. The Most Popular service is chair massage! It gained it’s popularity during Covid in 2020. Locals were having Spa Parties in their amazing backyards and Companies were trying to get employees back to the office after lockdown ended. Companies saw the value of chair massage to let the employee feel appreciated and actually improved mental health and productivity during the work day. Companies were wanting a different work culture and we are so excited to be a part of it! Some of our BIG NAMES today are the San Diego Padres, Pfizer, TEAM Risk Management Strategies, and many more. I got here to day because I was persistent, patience, and really saw the value of this kind of work. People needed us!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been a smooth road. I’m actually not sure if any entrepreneur has ever seen a smooth road and if you have-consider yourself lucky. We’ve had to navigate through 2 recessions, AB5, and experiencing the lack of skill that is coming out of the San Diego massage schools. I don’t just hire anybody with a massage license. When hiring, I not only look for skillset, but I also look for personality and customer service. This is why I am implementing a Skills Lab for those that I believe need some improvement in their massage skills but have the personality and customer service we are looking for.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Two Hands Wellness Events?
What sets us apart from our competitors is that we are a locally, woman owned company. We aren’t from other states with large financial backings. It all comes from ME. I’ve been in the industry for over 25 years and I’ve watched it’s challenges. The one thing I AM excited about is that in January 2026, CA massage therapists are now considered Health Care Professionals! This is the lane that every massage therapist should be in and now it’s recognized! We are known for providing mobile wellness services all over San Diego County. We always show up with a smile on our face and give the best service! What makes me most proud is that I’ve been trying to create a brand where people know who we are and what we do and as of right now, more people are finding us through google with “Two Hands” as the keywords as opposed to “massage” or “ mobile massage”. We want our readers to know that we are looking forward to working with you!
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Visiting my grandma in Venice Beach as she owned Lee’s Hamburger Stand. I would crawl up on one of the bar stools (yes, I started young, lol) and would watch my grandma cook with the background of the ocean behind her. Come to think about it, my grandmother and I are the only entrepreneurs in the family. Oh.. and then there’s my little brother who’s a big deal in real estate.
