Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Tisch.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a creative household. My grandfather, who I attribute an immense amount of my love for photography/cinematography too, was an engineer and artist. It seemed he saw things through a different lens (no pun intended) and brought his ideas to life with nothing but a pencil and paper. I loved the simplicity behind his approach.
The guy was truly inspiring. I remember finding myself lost in his work, and even tried to recreate some of his pieces. I think that, innately, I always had a love for art, but I largely credit my grandfather for sparking the passion and pursuance of photo and video, as those are nothing more than a form of art and personal expression. I picked up a camera for the first time around my early teenage years. I remember the first photo I took even to this day, and it sounds cliche, but from that moment, I was hooked.
I bought my first camera shortly after and, after experimenting with photo, I realized I was seeing things in life through the lens that I had been overlooking before. In some manner, I was mirroring my grandfathers approach to his creation, only in my case, it was a photo instead of a drawing. Nevertheless, it was still cool to put two and two together and recognize where the source of my vision came from.
It’s been a fun ride since.
Has it been a smooth road?
With anything in life, ups and downs are going to be present. I have lost motivation, drive, inspiration, and all the rest many times throughout the years. However, I always find my way back. It’s just a matter of finding your reset button and understanding that all things in life are cyclical. Passion never dies.
It’s just that, sometimes life happens and your motivation is challenged. But like I said before, you’ll always find your way back to it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I primarily specialize in photography. I suppose I’m known best for surf photography. However, I shoot everything. My work is not limited to one style, nor one industry. As I said before, I shoot everything and I welcome the opportunity to grow, experience the new, and further diversify my skillset.
I think that’s what sets me apart from other photographers. As I understand that it is advantageous to specialize and push one style of work, I find that I see more work opportunities than many of my peers due to the more diversified approach to my photography.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is the land of opportunity. Anyone can do anything they set their minds too here, as there is an immense amount of accessible resources around. Photography is art, and there is art everywhere. It just needs to be found.
