Today we’d like to introduce you to Denezel Bynum.
Hi Denezel , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started downtown on the sidewalks , our first first day selling was April of 2019 , late nights after the bars and clubs let out I would stay and sell our breakfast sandwiches til sometimes 5am , we made our way into a few downtown venues before the pandemic hit which halted my current operation along with having my first child on 3/12/2020 three days before the shut down I found a new motivation and energy source which made me go to the drawing board and figure out what can I do with what I have , I decided then to vend from my home I setup a nice out door cooking space with my grill in the backyard on the patio and advertised delivery and pickup from there I took our first stimulus check and invested into some new equipment to help me expand like a deep fryer for fries , a fridge/ freezer for beverages and storage for inventory, juice bottles for our lemonades custom stickers / logos for the boxes and bottles bigger grill etc , business took off I had cars lined up out front for pickup and people dinning in in our backyard ( we had tables and chairs with canyon view for guests and a pool table ) our landlord got concerned with our foot traffic and wanted an explanation that eventually in the coming months asked us to leave , I then had to figure out what I was going to do next with my business and a new home for my 6 month old baby , at this point I had to trust in god once again , which led us to the ugly dog pub in the Rolando / college area , we leased their patio and transformed it into a outdoor eatery for ppl to dine In that went extremely well the venue had foot traffic with no food options and they shared the outdoor space with a creative spaces that did radio , and podcasting with a live recording studio and retail space for merch , so between my foot traffic what they brought in we made out very well , until a disgruntled customer who came to the bar reported us for kicking him out for fighting and using racial slurs , county health came and shutdown our operation for various reasons so I had to shift my business once again to only doing events , private parties and a once a week pop up at an American legion for the next 6 months until I was able to lease a food truck
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We went thru many phases and had to overcome many obstacles but with the grace of god we got thru , between having to pivot for different locations , affording an expensive food truck lease and keeping up maintenance on a food truck it’s been bumpy for sure
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Average joes burgers ?
I make a very very exceptional burger , i created the concept of average joes to pay homage to our everyday hard working blue collar people, i come from a long line of hardworking blue collar men that I admire , respect want to show appreciation to . Each burger is named after an essential everyday working person who I view as heroes. I have quality products and my burgers are unique due to ingredients on each burgers .
What were you like growing up?
I have always been inspired by my parents my dad worked and retired from the navy but always kept a second job or side hustle to bring in money , he delivered pizza , loaded fedex trucks after his working on the ship all day came home showered ate and slept to do it all over again , he sold clothes from suits , jerseys and hats , shoes , colognes and body oils anything to help support his family , with that I learned to work hard I learned endurance and dedication , my mother was the creative, she worked as a CNa before opening her own daycare , she was the district chairlady for the youth at church and put on beaturty pageants , camping trips , plays and various other activities for the youth . I learned to be creative which help develop me into becoming a visionary and I had envisioned all that average joes is today years before I even sold my first order
