Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Santoro.
Hi Deborah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story with photography began in my childhood. My family was always taking photos, and because of that, I grew up surrounded by albums packed with memories. Today, I’m able to sit down with my own children and flip through those exact pages to show them where they came from.
Those albums hold so much more than just big vacations and major holidays, they captured the quiet, everyday moments, too. I can look back and see memories of drawing with my mom or playing cards with my cousins as if they happened yesterday. I cherish those images deeply, not just because of what they show, but because of how they keep those feelings alive. What began as a personal passion naturally evolved, and in 2014, I made the leap into turning that lifelong love into a full-time professional business.
Over the years, I noticed a shift in how people handle their most cherished family memories. In a digital world where thousands of photos sit forgotten on hard drives or lost in cloud storage, I wanted to build something deeper and more meaningful for my clients. That vision led me to build a print-focused portrait studio model.
Today, my focus is entirely on creating custom, tangible artwork for families that they can cherish for generations.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any creative entrepreneur’s road is completely smooth, and mine has certainly had its pivotal learning curves!
One of the biggest challenges was stepping away from the traditional ‘digital-only’ model that dominates so much of the photography industry. In the beginning, like many photographers, I was delivering only digital files on flash drives or online galleries. But over time, I realized that approach didn’t serve my clients well. Those digital files often sat forgotten on hard drives, never making it onto walls or into family hands.
Transitioning to a print-focused studio required completely re-modeling my business. It meant learning the intricacies of physical art production, finding top-tier artisan print labs, and educating clients on the value of tangible heirlooms. Stepping into that niche took confidence, especially when going against the grain of low-cost, digital-heavy trends.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a deep love for working with people, hearing their stories, capturing their special moments, and working side-by-side to create long-lasting memories that families will cherish for a lifetime. Above all, what I am most proud of are the genuine relationships I build with my clients. There is no greater feeling than earning someone’s trust, especially when families return to me year after year to document new chapters of their lives.
What sets me apart from other studios is my collaborative, full-service approach. I guide my clients through every single step of the process. We begin with a personal consultation where I assist with wardrobe styling and location selection to bring their vision to life, and we work closely together to tailor the experience to their unique needs.
That care extends to how their portraits are displayed. I have personally hand-selected every fine art product I offer—each custom-made in Italy to the highest standard. These are the exact same handcrafted heirlooms I proudly display in my own home for my own family, and it brings me so much joy to offer that same timeless quality to the families I serve.
What are your plans for the future?
In the near future, I am thrilled to announce that for the very first time, we will be offering Holiday Petite Sessions. This limited-edition experience features shorter, beautifully styled studio or on-location session tailored specifically for the holiday season. Because these sessions are offered only for a very limited time, they provide a wonderful opportunity for families to update their portraits and create seasonal keepsakes.
I am also continuously finding ways to elevate the client experience from the moment someone reaches out to the day their final artwork arrives. I have expanded our product collection to include a stunning new fine art acrylic wall display featuring custom-colored frames, combining modern clarity with hand-crafted elegance.
