Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tara Shah.
Hi Dr. Tara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path to acupuncture wasn’t very direct. I started out on the East Coast, where I studied chemistry and later worked in the pharmaceutical industry. I had always been interested in health and medicine, but over time I realized I wanted a career that felt more personal and allowed me to work with people in a more meaningful, one-on-one way.
In 2017, I moved to San Diego and made the decision to completely change directions and study acupuncture and Chinese medicine. It was a big leap, and definitely not the easiest or most predictable path, but it felt like the right one. After years of school, clinical training and learning from different styles of acupuncture, I eventually opened Tara Acupuncture & Wellness in 2023.
Since then, the practice has grown in ways I’m really grateful for. I’ve also grown a lot as both a practitioner and a business owner. When I first opened, I was focused on simply building the practice and figuring out all of the pieces that come with running a small business. Now, I feel much more grounded in the kind of experience I want to create for my patients.
My approach is very individualized. I combine different acupuncture styles and techniques depending on the person in front of me, and I make a point of giving each patient the time and attention they need so I can understand what is going on and keep each treatment personal rather than formulaic.
Looking back, it has been a big transition from chemistry and pharmaceuticals to acupuncture and private practice, but each part of that journey has shaped how I work today. I’m still learning, still evolving and still finding ways to make the practice better, which is honestly one of the things I enjoy most about it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Changing careers meant starting over in a lot of ways, and opening my own practice brought a whole new set of challenges that I hadn’t really been exposed to before.
One of the biggest learning curves was realizing how much goes into running a small business beyond the actual work you trained to do. There’s scheduling, marketing, finances, systems, patient communication, compliance and all of the little decisions that happen behind the scenes. In the beginning, I was learning many of those things as I went, and there were definitely moments where it felt overwhelming.
There was also the challenge of building confidence and being patient with growth. When you care deeply about what you’re creating, it’s easy to want everything to come together quickly. I had to learn that building a practice takes time, and that not every decision is going to be perfect the first time. Some things work, some don’t, and you adjust.
Looking back, I think those challenges helped me become much more adaptable and comfortable trusting my own judgment. I’m still learning all the time, but I feel much more confident now in both the clinical side of my work and in how I want to run the practice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Tara Acupuncture & Wellness is a private acupuncture practice in San Diego focused on personalized, one-on-one care. I work with a wide range of concerns, including pain, stress and anxiety, sleep, digestive issues, women’s health and other areas where acupuncture can be a supportive part of someone’s care.
My style is not one-size-fits-all. I draw from traditional Chinese medicine, classical Japanese meridian therapy and orthopedic acupuncture, and I may incorporate techniques such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion or e-stim depending on what is appropriate for the individual. I also offer microneedling, nanoneedling and LED therapy for patients interested in supporting skin health.
What I think sets the practice apart most is the amount of attention I give each person, even as the practice has grown. I want to understand what someone is experiencing, what has been changing, what their goals are and how they are responding over time. I make a point of keeping treatments individualized rather than following a formula. Even when two people come in with the same complaint, their treatments may look completely different.
I’m probably most proud of the environment and reputation I’ve been able to build around that kind of care. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, feel listened to and know that their treatment is being thoughtfully adapted to them. The small details matter to me, from the atmosphere of the treatment room to how I communicate with patients and follow their progress.
More than anything, I want people to know that Tara Acupuncture & Wellness is meant to be a place where care feels personal. I’m always continuing to learn, refine my approach and improve the patient experience, while staying true to the kind of practice I wanted to create from the beginning.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The easiest way to work with me is to become a patient at Tara Acupuncture & Wellness. I see people for a wide range of concerns, and I always start by getting to know what they’re experiencing and what they hope to get out of treatment.
I’m also very open to collaborating with other healthcare and wellness professionals when it makes sense for the patient. I think there is a lot of value in different providers communicating and supporting someone from different angles, especially when care is complex or ongoing.
As for supporting the practice, referrals and word of mouth mean a lot to me. Many people find me because a friend, family member or another provider shared their experience or recommended the practice, and I never take that lightly. People can also support the practice by following along online, sharing educational content or simply helping others become more aware of acupuncture and the different ways it can be used as part of their care.
