Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Hall.
Michele, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My first career, from June 1972 through January 1991, working as a registered nurse where I held a few positions including working in the operation room, pediatric intensive care unit, in-hospital research, and running a newborn screening in southern California.
I retired from nursing in 1991 and joined my husband in our family business (Howard Hall Productions), utilizing the skills I’d learned as a nurse and during my vacations spent traveling with and supporting film crews making marine-related wildlife documentary films.
During this time I have focused my efforts on producing films for television and theatrical release, and I’m now perhaps best known for my marine-related underwater IMAX films. Many of my films have been recognized with awards at wildlife film festivals. It’s important to me to make family-friendly films that raise awareness of and increase appreciation for the marine environment. I’ve been told more than once over the years that my films have inspired people to turn their career choices toward marine sciences and / or environmental issues. I also enjoy taking underwater still photos of the marine environment, marine animals (especially depicting animal behavior) and behind-the-scenes stills and video of our film productions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
They say you’re only as good as your last film. Fortunately, I’ve yet to produce a real stinker. To date our films have been received well by audiences and have been profitable for our Executive Producers, so I’ve not had trouble getting more contracts.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I produce marine wildlife documentaries for our production company, Howard Hall Productions. We make family-friendly films for broadcast, streaming venues and IMAX theatrical release. Once we make a commitment to a project, we pride ourselves in delivering on-time and on-budget. I’m very proud of the fact that after being in this business for over three and a half decades, the films I produce are still recognized as being valuable, and are still winning awards.
I’ve also managed our stock footage library where we licensed footage that Howard had captured (underwater, aerials, time lapse and night sky) to other productions. That library is now managed by one of our agents.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m not looking at making any big changes in the future. I plan to continue diving and making marine-related wildlife documentary films, and to photographing underwater – both marine wildlife and behind the scenes of our films.
