Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Perry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Always working in high-tech environments, I love the almost forced speed of growth and change that comes with technology-driven organizations. As I progressed thru’ my career and was fortunate to travel extensively, living in 4 different countries, I saw clear evidence that people make or break the success of the organization. My upbringing had a lovely mix of cultures and a lot of entrepreneurial spirits, that was also embodied into the business environment, with relatively little formal structure.
It is said that “Culture trumps Strategy every time”, and as I lived and worked across multiple cultures, I saw the importance of alignment and clarity in communication throughout all the phases a business has to navigate – vision, strategy, structure, planning & execution. I have always been interested in people & excellence, so over time I focused more and more on ‘HOW’ people get work done and “HOW” they do their best work.
Today I get to use all the experience I learned across cultures, across increasing roles of responsibility, and executive leadership positions to fulfill my purpose of helping others succeed and be their best. I am truly amazed and feel very blessed by my journey of learning, opportunity, and the incredibly talented and wickedly smart people I have met along the way. They have all contributed to my growth & development that have lead to success.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think part of learning is about experiencing the bumps along the way and for me I feel that I have learned something valuable with every challenge and it has made me stronger and more grateful to be where I am today. A lot of life is about being in the right place to seize the opportunities and so one of my challenges was the tedious journey to becoming an American citizen.
Moving from South Africa it was a long road, that cost a lot not only in terms of money but mostly in terms of having to prove yourself both from an education and achievement perspective. You endure some incredibly mundane jobs that you are completely overqualified for while your educational qualifications get re-evaluated during the green card and citizenship process, and then you work your way back up to a level of relevance to an area where you can contribute your best work. This has to all be done much faster because you’ve now lost time, so you end up working doubly hard and very long hours.
The interesting part of this journey is that you know a lot and can improve on re-doing it, and also learn some additional things that hopefully make you a better person & leader along the way. I know it has been worthwhile to reach this point of doing what I love every day and adding value to a country that has given me the opportunity, friendships and the experience of living such a good life here in the USA. Every day I am thankful to be here, and appreciate how incredible my life here is.
