Thanks for sharing your story with us Jackie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Started with a makeup lover turned makeup artist with a DREAM. After years of working as a freelance makeup artist, Jackie felt the need to share her passion with others. She began teaching classes locally which grew in popularity. Dominating Social Media, she became an internationally know beauty influencer @Makeup_by_Jackie. With the increasing demand for education, Jackie began a successful makeup class tour that filled seats at multiple hotel venues. With huge sponsorship and support from reputable companies such as Tarte Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Pinky Rose Cosmetics, Beauty Blender and so many more. Over the years she found herself driving hours to re-stock her favorite makeup products or paying heavy online shipping costs. She realized there was nowhere in San Diego where she could try, let alone buy her favorite makeup products. Thus, Glam Powder Room was born. A one stop Makeup Store that carries popular makeup brands that can regularly only be purchased online. Glam Powder Room is also a Makeup & Waxing studio with raving reviews. GPR studio offers makeup services, makeup classes, eyebrow shaping (trained by Anastasia Beverly Hills herself) and waxing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are many struggles that come with opening and operating a business. I spent years researching brands, location, market, etc. One of my biggest struggles was finding a location. I searched for years before actually finding a space that I liked and thought would be a good fit for my business idea. There were also so many costs that I did not expect to encounter once I opened my business. But the biggest struggle of all was building the courage to actually begin the process of starting a business, it was terrifying. Since opening the doors, it’s been semi-smooth sailing, with a few hiccups along the way. I’ve just been learning and growing with whatever is thrown my way.
The advice I would give is to research as much as possible before beginning the process, to avoid any unwanted surprises.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glam Powder Room – what should we know?
I specialize in makeup, waxing and makeup education.
I’ve been doing makeup for 12+ years, my makeup career started on set for Lifetime TV Network.
Since starting my career as a makeup artist, I’ve created hair and make-up designs for the film and beauty industry that includes Spanish Television “TeleNovelas”, San Diego Comic Con, music concerts, runway shoots, feature films and the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.
Prior to opening my storefront, I built my reputation locally through doing makeup and hair styling for bridal parties, body building competitions, and local community events.
Throughout the years I’ve been known for my makeup artistry, but since opening my business I have become best known for my brow shaping techniques. People drive hours and even come from other states to get their brows done at my studio. I have built quite the reputation for my brow shaping services. My brow shaping work has been the feature by some of the top brands in the beauty industry and in stores all over the world. I have also worked alongside some of the biggest names in the Brow industry such as Anastasia Beverly Hills.
Some of the things that set us apart from other salons or beauty retail stores are the fact that we not only offer amazing services, but we carry popular makeup products that are not found in major retail stores (products that can usually only be found online). People like to swatch or try makeup before actually purchasing it. So giving people the opportunity to do so with their favorite online only makeup brands really sets us apart.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I would say that connecting with locals and local businesses helps the growth. Locals love supporting small businesses. We initially started with networking via Facebook, Instagram and other online platforms, which we still do implement in our marketing and networking strategies. But really being involved in the community brings long lasting business.
