Today we’d like to introduce you to Justine Nord.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Justine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved horses. From the time I could talk, it was all about horses. Having moved to San Diego just 4 years ago. I was starting a new life here and wanted to create a job for myself that was fulfilling and allowed me time with my passion… horses and riding dressage.
I was inspired to start massaging horses by giving my own horse a rub down one day. He would lean into the pressure on areas he wanted more and move away from areas that were sore or tender. I thought about how much this bodywork would help him feel good and how it was a great reflection on our riding. I knew that any performance horse would benefit and so I looked for a place that could certify me in equine massage. I found Equine Pacifica, owned by Jane Wesson, in Del Mar. After several months of certification, I completed the required hours. I started out by putting my flyers at every jumping and dressage show, local tack stores and other businesses. I went to all the shows and talked to everyone I knew about my services.
Soon, I started getting business at the shows. My clients would tell me how great their horse felt the next day or how much more supple they felt. The validation was encouraging. Now, almost 3 years later, I have a full book of business in dressage and jumping. My business includes many amazing equine athletes including olympic and national performance horses. The horses give me so much joy and they continue to teach me. It’s everything I ever imagined and more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I didn’t really feel like there were any challenges. I was dedicated to putting myself out there and talking with people. I stayed consistent with my marketing, believed in myself and what I do and the business came to me. I am grateful for all the clients that continue to use me for their magnificent animals.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Healing Hands for the Equine Athlete – what should we know?
I specialize in sports massage and cold laser therapy for horses. The majority of my business comes from performance horses in dressage and show jumping. I love hearing from my clients how great their horse feels the next day in training.
Being a dressage rider myself, I believe my clients appreciate someone who “speaks their language”. This makes my job so much more thorough in terms of how I can help the horse feel better in certain areas.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that having a positive demeanor and treating all horses with the true intention of love and healing.
