Check out Evan Lopez’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Lopez.

Back in 2006, Evan started working with clay as a high school freshmen. Now 27 years old, he has been dedicated to the craft for over a decade, avidly studying new techniques and approaches while learning the ins and outs of the trade on his own and in school. In his earlier days as a clay artist, Evan had the privilege to frequent a pottery studio owned by David and Mary Cuzick, seasoned pottery veterans with over 35 years of experience in the market.

This relationship was pivotal, as Evan had the chance to get to know the industry beyond the pure act of “making”. Through the Cuzicks, he had the vital opportunity to truly live the daily life as a potter with someone who has been making a living that way for several decades.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m a craftsman and artisan with a passion for quality ceramics. From everyday utilitarian pieces to sculptures, I have a personal and direct style that I loves to share. I want to make pottery that is of the highest quality that stands out among other work.

I want people to be drawn into the work, then led on an investigative journey of discovering the subtle characteristics that all add up to the best work I could possibly make. Glazes that have multidimensional qualities that melt together and bring the person who is interacting with the work in close to study the depth of colors and glaze characteristics.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I define success through the feedback of the person who is viewing or interacting with my work. When a viewer notices all the major and minor details that went into the dedication of making the best work possible. Dedication to the understanding of the medium an artist uses is essential. When the work speaks for its self, when it invites curiosity of process that is successful artwork.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
As a member of the San Diego Potters Guild in Spanish Village, Balboa Park CA my work can be seen year round in the gallery space there. Bi-Annually the Guild does a patio sale in the Spanish village, where each member displays all the work they have been producing for the previous 6 months. It’s truly a pottery spectacular with thousands of pieces on display from 30 plus members of the guild. I make around 200 pieces for the show.
