Conversations with the Inspiring Michelle Robek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Robek.

Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in a small town in northern California, I itched for a more eclectic and fast passed lifestyle. I moved to southern California in 2008 and got a degree in Sculpture. However, I knew I had to find a way to translate my passion for art and be able to make a living. Decided to go back to school and got my cosmetology license and never looked back. My passion for creating translated perfectly with sculpting peoples hair. My classical training in painting has given me a unique eye for color. In 2016, I opened Michelle Robek Hair Design and have been working vigorously to create, inspire, and transform everyone that sits in my chair. When I am not in my salon, I work at the Disneyland Resort as a hair and makeup artist developing wigs for the performers. I love creating bold color combinations and take inspiration from classic vintage styles to give all of my clients looks that feel timeless but unique to their person.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth, definitely not. In the beginning, I jumped a lot around salons trying to find a place where I fit. Working with other artist is not always the easiest thing to do. However, the experiences that I had at each salon I worked at shaped me to become the stylist and artist that I am today. I knew that there was something I could take away from each place and I am happy for those experiences. You can’t let others hold you down. It’s hard and discouraging at times, but you have to keep your head up and focus on you and your clients. I’m thankful for the clients that I have had since day 1. They have stuck by my side and continue to stand by my work, their trust in me has blown me away and helps make the hard days better. I knew that putting my focus on learning was the most important part when I was first starting and it truly is what has given me the skill set I have now. Sometimes, it felt like I was moving backward but it was all part of the learning process.

what should we know about Michelle Robek Hair Design? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I operate a full-service hair salon. I do it all, color, cuts, styles, even waxing. I am known for my modern twist on vintage styles. I love being able to take inspiration from classic looks from the 20’s, 50’s and 60’s. Being able to create a fun funky color combination and pairing them with a more classic roller set or pin-curl style. I also specialize in long hair beauties. A fair amount of my clients have naturally long thick hair! But, I blow them out and style them like a boss!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Thankfully, being my own boss eliminates a lot of barriers that women generally face. Although, I had a lot of pushback when starting my business especially from males. Lots of hoops to jump through they don’t make it easy.
