Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Chavez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kendra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My artistic journey started in decorative painting at 10 years old, full-scale murals by 16. Since then, I have studied business and graduated from a top beauty school. I take pride in my passion for color theory and enhancing beauty wherever I can. I get so excited to work with people on whatever their dream look maybe, whether that is the best version of themselves or to look like a completely new incarnation.
I am a native San Diego based beauty specialist with 10 years professional experience. I am known for my diverse range of artistic ability. Everything from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. I have had the awesome opportunity to work on fashion shows, magazine spreads, billboards, calendars, theater, weddings, body painting as well as special effects.
I have also gotten to write about the beauty industry for several online media outlets including interviews of such titans as Michael Key (Editor of Makeup Artist Magazine & Creator of the International Makeup Artist Tradeshows), blogging, product description and brand relations for Camera Ready Cosmetics.
Has it been a smooth road?
There will always be people who will say YOU CAN’T DO IT, IT’S IMPOSSIBLE! Ignore them because those are the people who are afraid to dream. Surround yourself with people who believe in you even if they don’t understand a word you are saying! My husband is my biggest cheerleader and every time I’ve had a setback or someone has tried to tear me down he reminds me of the people I have helped feel their most beautiful then he hands me coffee and glitter and sends me back out the door.
You are going to have rough days: burn your foot the 1st day of beauty school, your 1st job out of school maybe be for “The Devil Wears Prada”, state board might give you the runaround, you may have to work in an environment that feels like the Plastics from Mean Girls, you may even have to move to another state and start your career all over again but I would do it all over again to be where I am now. The relationships I have build and leaders I have grown to admire are irreplaceable. I can think of 3 lady bosses off the top of my head who are running empires but would give me advice in a hot minute!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty by Kendra – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Ever since beauty school, I never wanted to be in just one category and strive to be great at many services. I am very proud to be a Connoisseur of Color, Nail Ninja, Makeup Maverick, Scissor Slinger, Skincare Sorceress, Waxing Wizard and most recently a Lash Luxifier!
I have been doing wild colored hair since 2008 long before we had unicorn, galaxy or mermaid hair! I love it! People always say I wish I was brave enough to do that and I say ANYONE can have the hair of their dreams! I have had the honor of painting the hair of active duty military (just placing it in exactly the right spot so they can hide it when on duty), accountants, CEO’s, young, old and creatives of all walks of life.
I think one of the more interesting things I’ve been asked to do was paint names and scenery on pregnant ladies bellies. It was so fun and turned out so beautiful! One was pregnant with twins and was from Florida, so I painted a whole beach scene with the ocean, chairs, umbrellas, sky, birds the works.
I am most complimented when someone says I have never felt more beautiful and I say you were already beautiful I just helped you see it too!
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are amazing and when we realize the power we have to help ourselves and each other we are unstoppable! We no longer have to be limited by the ideas of others. We don’t have to stay in our designated lane anymore! Whatever you choose to pursue do it with every ounce of your being! There is always a way!
I use to have a sticker that said live every day like your ass is on fire! Do you have a crazy idea? Make it happen! Do you want to figure out how to send cupcakes to the international space station? Do it! Do you want to make garden fountains that circulate glitter? Do it! Do you want to be the first woman president? Do it!
