Art & Life with Lucy Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Lopez.

Lucy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As a child I’ve always been drawn to entertainment and role playing I’d make up dance routines and record my singing on cassette, Disney was always my influence too. When art came up in school I Spent extra time there too. After being a drama kid in high school, my opportunity for the best job in my life was there for me. A Popular San Diego party company hired me as a children’s entertainer. Making $75.00 in one hour and $50.00 every hour after that was very good incentive to wear Dora The Explorer and Tinker Bell outfits while making balloons and performing magic. Face Painting became a focus once I realized I could be better at it and provide more quality service by doing so. People have expressed how fast I paint with impressive outcomes. Not all face painters can paint fancy full face designs in under 3 mins while singing princess songs. I’ve been able to utilize all my skills and gifts in my business and also learn new art forms, such as henna tattoos. I’ve been able to express my art and make memorable encounters with many people of San Diego while also being a stay at home mom to my four year old son. Now I’m incorporating my passion for dance/fitness and health by including children’s Zumba dance as a new activity and offering classes privately as well.

Currently, I’m working with more professional artists and working as a booking agent to get these other talented individuals more work as well. We all work together to share the work when we get overbooked. I have many artists out there to thank for the extra work I’ve collected through them too. I’m proud to be an official working artist for San Diego and for my family.

The struggles are very different from the day to day full time job many people have because my career depends on how many parties I book or how much more I can make myself valuable. I have many repeat clients and it’s such a treasure to be at their party year after year and have their trust and the trust of their family and friends too. I only hope to continue this for the city of San Diego and I’m thankful to San Diego for giving me that chance every time I’m welcomed to their party.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art form comes through face and body paint, henna, balloon art, song, dance, and character performance.

It has always been about entertainment and making children or people happy. As a party character your goal is to make a lasting impression on the child and party goers. A princess wouldn’t normally painting but if she was really magical her paintings would be magical too so that’s what I try to incorporate with my parties. Not only as a princess but as a regular face painter. I make sure I’m not there just to paint the kids and leave but to make it special for them and fun too. My specialty is also my speed as an artist. I understand as a face painter there are diehard fans who will wait one hour in line for their face painted. I thank them for giving me my work but I also feel for the parents and children standing for long periods while they can be enjoying other activities. So I have learned many techniques to make my art fast while also amazing.

When I leave my parties or events I hope to have left the love I have for my art and the evidence of passion for what I do in order to make my clients happy. It’s truly a gift to be able to achieve just that. I want to share with the children and adults I work with that you can be happy doing something that you really love if you just put in the practice and passion.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I would define success as an artist by my ability to have made it a part time job I really enjoy. I’m not burning myself out since I only work weekends. Success depends on the artists’ goals or desires. My desire was to find my calling as a person in order to provide for myself and family and make me happy. Once I accomplished this then I considered myself successful in what I set my heart on. It’s about setting goals for yourself and challenging yourself while also putting yourself out there in attempts to improve and be better every year that comes.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can book me for private events or parties. I am always looking for new street fairs and large events to be an artist. My website is available with all the packages I offer at fun4kidset.com. I have Instagram @fun4kidset and @luciaslalaland for my art and my business pages. People can support me at these platforms by following and thinking of me for any corporate events or a kids party.
