Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Koumaras.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have been creating my whole life. Growing up I was fascinated watching my mother paint portraits. I loved to sketch as a child for friends. Early on I was interested in designing men’s clothing and particularly loved creating classic pieces. Only recently in the past five years I have devoted my passion and time to painting on canvas. I love the freedom and personal expression painting allows me. Painting makes me feel alive and it is quite magical to complete a piece.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a painter. I love to use acrylic, molding paste, and pumice on canvas. There is something haphazard about the beginning process of painting that I enjoy. I am passionate about creating large, bold, vibrant paintings. There is something powerful about the unlimited potential of a huge, blank canvas! I usually layer the paint quickly to create texture and depth on the canvas. I then scrape away pieces to reveal the strata below. Through this process, the pulse of the painting is created, imbued with underlying sentiment and vibration within each piece.
I am obsessed with intensely bold and vibrant color. Exploring the relationship between balance and movement is what guides me to produce art. I have a connection to the female form and the majority of my work captures that relationship on canvas. Recently, I have begun to paint abstract pieces and I love how a specific piece can transform a room. I find joy in creating large, energetic, and striking paintings. Creating art is such a powerful and joyful experience for me.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Keep creating and don’t give up. Follow your passion.
I regret not starting to paint earlier but I am inspired and hopeful for my future as long as I am able to paint!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently I am the artist-in-residence for Eleven Eleven Winery in Napa. They have been instrumental in exposing my work and extremely supportive of me as an artist. I feel a connection with their mantra “make your moment” and embrace and remind myself of those words often!
Locally, I am showing in GLO Salon downtown, Urban Calm Spa, LUCO Hair and Skin, Jean-Claude Salon, Saiko Sushi, Salon 5th Avenue, and the Boys and Girls Club in Vista. I am also working with Pacific Sothebys and Berkshire Hathaway staging some of their homes with my paintings. It is really wonderful to see a blank space transformed with my art.
