Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Ling.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a local designer and illustrator! I started drawing when I was really young and found I loved documenting the world around me through drawing everything I saw, experienced and thought about. I went to SDSU for graphic design but always focused illustration. I have had the fortunate opportunity to draw for some of my favorite brands, and continue to pursue drawing and making things for anyone I can!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has never been easy! A lot of schools I freelanced through, and being a co-parent at an early age defiantly gave me a few extra things to juggle during schooling and working full time. Establishing yourself as an illustrator and designer takes a lot of work and effort, and I’ve spent countless hours drawing, practicing, updating skill sets, and figuring out what is it that I want to pursue and focus on.
I definitely have had my share of faceplates, not fitting into roles I was hired for and missing important deadlines due to family things. I am incredibly organized and work as much as I can, but keeping a steady paycheck has always been a priority for my situation.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shelby Ling Design and Illustration – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I started out in the surf industry. I grew up surfing and drawing for action sports and had my first jobs in art departments in that industry. I have continued to grow in the action sports industry but lately, have been trying to stay in environmental and with companies that share ethical views with.
I like to focus on work for children, sharing color, my enthusiasm for the environment and for exploration. I’ve recently been focusing on drawing infographics that share my passion for reducing waste, caring for our planet, and gardening. I think sharing things you believe in, and showing what you’re most passionate about, not only helps your work but shows people what you believe in.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am deeply passionate about textiles and drawing for things I believe in. I would love to do more textile design and continue drawing about environmental issues and health issues. I am in a job transition right now, so I am looking to take on more freelance and mural work.
