Meet Jordan Ramay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Ramay.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been drawn to arts in one way or another. I started at an early age writing music and preforming all the way up through college where I majored in vocals and guitar. My passion for music faded and I started applying my writing to my love for film and eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in screenwriting. I wrote, produced, directed and starred in a web series called Wasted Talent but throughout the shooting process I found myself behind the camera more and more and started shooting stills in my free time. I shot my first event for a friend’s book release party and she actually paid me for it which can be a rare thing in an artist’s life, lol. I assisted a friend on a wedding shoot and I was hooked. The rest is history. I knew instantly that this was what I was supposed to do with my life and I have been doing it ever since.

Please tell us about your art.
I think the coolest thing about a photo is the capturing of a moment in time and being able to relive that moment over and over again. A wedding is usually one of the most important and happy moments in a person’s life and the fact that two people trust me to document that moment is an honor all in itself. I recently did a Mother’s Day shoot for a friend with her and her son. When I was at their family BBQ a few weeks later a woman came up to me right when I got there and asked me if I was the photographer that took the pictures of her daughter and her grandson. When I answered yes, she hugged me and thanked me. Then she said that the pictures I took of them are going to hang on their family’s wall for generations to come… I had never felt so honored in my entire life. That is why I do this.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Find a good mentor. You can take all the classes a university has to offer, but nothing will prepare you for and propel you towards a successful career better than learning from someone who has already done what you are trying to do. I would not be where I am today without the help and guidance of my mentor, Richard Policastro. He’s an incredible photographer and I’m sure you will see him on Creative Live or running a panel at WPPI in the next year or two.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
