Art & Life with Amanda Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Smith.

Amanda, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have loved photography since I can remember. I took film classes in High School and progressively learned the basics of digital photography over time. The birth of my daughter Jessa inspired me to take my basic knowledge and to make a real effort to learn photography on a whole new level.

As I was finding my way in the world of photography, I found my absolute passion- birth photography. I remember painfully little details from my own births, and none of it with the clarity or detail that I would have liked. The more births I document, the more passionate I am about my work. Since discovering my passion for birth photography I have trained and certified specifically in birth photography through an organization called Birth Becomes Her.

I now specialize in maternity, birth, newborn, and all things motherhood.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Birth photography is so important to me because it’s one of the biggest days in a family’s life and they witness so little of it. It is an absolute honor to be able to sit in the peripheral and to document all those little moments that would be otherwise lost- The admiration on a partner’s face as they watch a woman delivering their child, the raw power of a woman breathing through a contraction, the moment a new soul comes earth side, those first moments bonding as a new family. Those are the very best moments life has to offer. They deserve to be documented.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I define success as having properly documented an event in a way that tells the whole story with nothing but images. I feel that a good eye, determination to get that perfect shot, and a whole lot of hard work are essential for success.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My website www.wildheartbyamandasmith.com is a work in progress for showcasing what I am able to share. I also post regularly to one of two Facebook pages- Wild Heart by Amanda Smith for maternity and newborn images and Birth Stories by Amanda Smith for all things birth related.
