Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Manion.
Amanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey into the beauty industry started when I enrolled in Esthetician school back in 2009. From there, I went through a Makeup Artistry school, which would lead me to get my cosmetology license in 2012. It’s been a bumpy start… I took time to pursue my AA degree in Liberal studies while trying to figure out what I truly wanted to do in life. After several attempts, I have finally reached one of my dream jobs, which is hair and makeup at Disneyland. I love working with the performers and bringing to life guests favorite characters. On the side, I have done freelance work with hair and makeup and recently created my own beauty YouTube channel. I’m only at the beginning of my career in the beauty industry and I hope to continue to grow in it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads. I have had many doubters, even myself, along the way who have tried to discourage me. I’ve learned, though, to have a support system of people who believe in you, and to never give up on your dreams or passions. I’d recommend creating a plan of what it is you want to do, what it is you need to do to get there and go for it!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I try to do it all. I cut, color, and style hair, and even do waxing and skin care. Currently, I specialize building and styling wigs. I’m most known for my makeup skills (beauty, FX, airbrush) and shaping eyebrows. On my YouTube channel, my goal is to bring makeup and hair tutorials along with product reviews for my viewers to enjoy and learn from.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
It may be a competitive world but there is only one of you. You have something to offer, that no one else does. There will be many obstacles, but you just have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, learn from the mistakes, and don’t give up on your dreams.
