Meet Jennifer Bahr of Resilience Naturopathic in Mission Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Bahr.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I founded Resilience Naturopathic in 2014 when I moved to San Diego, but I had been dreaming of it for at least a decade before it came to fruition. It started when I was introduced to the conventional mental health care system first hand. I went looking for help and healing and I was given a life-sentence with my diagnosis, a medication that made me feel flat and physically sick, and a hefty dose of stigma.

I had always intended to be a doctor, but it was this experience, that gave me the drive to help people with mental health conditions actually heal, using natural therapies. The first person I had to start with was me.

I expected that I would have to spend many years following traditional medical training to learn all of the natural and holistic therapies used around the world. It was sheer luck that I found out about naturopathic medicine that is 100% integrative, blending the best of modern diagnostic tools, conventional medications, and the best of natural medicine in a single 4-year medical program.

4 years of medical school, residency, and a whole lot of research, clinical practice and personal work, and I am not living my dream – I get to help people avoid, reduce or eliminate their need for psych meds.

I am especially driven to help kids and women hoping to become pregnant. Psychiatric medications have significant impacts on adult brains, but can be very detrimental to a developing brain. Working with women who want to get pregnant also allows me to help the future generation by reducing their risk for mental health conditions with excellent preconception care and elimination of psychiatric medications.

In fact, it was my own desire to eventually be able to have a family that propelled me to explore homeopathy as a treatment option. It has proven to be the most effective form of treatment I have ever used and is the key to our success with our patients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in business or health is ever smooth, but it wasn’t horribly rocky either. I don’t tend to dwell on mistakes or obstacles from the past. I navigate through them, learn from them, and grow to improve my business and my work with my patients.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Resilience Naturopathic story. Tell us more about the business.
We help people gain freedom from mental illness. Our specialty is using integrative and natural medicine to help people avoid, reduce or eliminate their need for psychiatric medications.

I am most proud of the fact that we can give hope to people who feel hopeless and misunderstood. We help people realize that a mental health diagnosis is lifelong, and then we help them recover and get their lives back.

We are different than conventional psychiatry and even other integrative doctors in that we use therapies that help people heal at the level of susceptibility. Conventional medications force biochemistry in the body. So do natural therapies like supplements and strict diets. We go beyond that – so that people can actually heal and not have a lifetime of daily pills.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The demand for naturopathic medicine is growing rapidly. People are recognizing that the current system of medical care is reductionist to a fault, and fails to truly take the whole person into consideration.

People are demanding that their doctors take them as a whole person into consideration, and naturopathic doctors are the only healthcare providers who are trained to take this approach in every single circumstance from day one of their training.
