Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Potts.
Julie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
You know how people always say “since before I could walk…”? Well that’s definitely how long I have had a pencil in my hand by no exaggeration of the phrase! 100% self-taught, after first discovering I could draw at a super young age my equally creative mother equipped me with supplies for every medium from clay to paint to sewing and more! Through the years I have used my art to hone my skills at a very young age, to express myself as I got older, and to escape from reality as an adult. Today I enjoy the little bit of each of these influences that go into everything I make and paint. My earliest works still sit on my friends and family’s walls, and I hope for new collectors to have that kind of connection when they fall in love with a piece made by a total stranger.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I mainly paint on various sized canvas from tiny to quite large, often embellishing them with different materials. Additionally, I make jewelry, keychains, crowns, hair pieces and other fun sculptures to appease the masses in the wonderful world of art! When working at festivals I do hands-on type art and live paintings including “30-minute moon phase” paintings of any specific date, and “Fire Art” where the audience gets to create their own designs with alcohol inks and (safely) watch me burn it into the glass with a torch. When it comes to my art and creations my aesthetic is highly musically influenced and tends to be a bit dark and macabre. I always paint the part of myself that I’m feeling most at that moment and there is always an awesome response from audience which is extremely gratifying.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice is to never limit yourself to one WIP at a time, start several pieces and work on whatever your feeling at the moment!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
