Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Scofield.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Patrick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve had my contractor’s license since 1981; I grew up in Bakersfield, CA and worked for my Uncle’s construction company before starting California Home Builders in 1991. In 2008, I came down to San Diego for a wedding; it happened to be the same weekend of the devastating Witch Fire in Rancho Bernardo. I had a feeling this could be a good opportunity for California Home Builders, Inc. to expand to another city. While some builders were trying to encourage fire survivors to build a similar-custom tract style home, I knew that we could build them a fully custom home of their dreams while treating them like family. We rebuilt about 15 homes during that time, since then our business has fully transitioned from Bakersfield to San Diego and has continued to expand and grow. To this day, we still stay in contact with many of those clients and they are great friends and we appreciate all the work they have referred to us over the years. Today, we design and build custom new construction and remodels for clients as well as develop spec homes and sell them through our brokerage company Scofield Homes, Inc.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. When I came down to San Diego in 2008 it took me about a year and a half to land my first fire rebuild. Rightfully, so there was a lot of pushback from the community since I was not a local. Contractors came from all over the United States to rebuild the homes that burnt down. They thought it would be easy to capitalize on. As far as I know, we were the only ones to persevere and prove that we were here to stay. A couple of our first fire rebuild clients even traveled north to Bakersfield to see our completed builds and build quality since we didn’t have any product to view locally. The fire rebuilds were tough but there was nothing like the feeling we got from seeing our clients get to go back home. I was fortunate enough to build some great friendships with our clients and we still see each other to this day.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about California Home Builders, Inc. – what should we know?
We are a family owned and operated custom new construction and remodeling company. We specialize in assisting clients in the early stages of designing house plans to the complete build of a new construction home. On all our development of spec builds we make the design selections ourselves, and on our client, new construction builds and remodels we assist with design as needed throughout the project. We strive to make home building an easy process for the client with our project management procedures. In addition to new construction, we do remodel throughout San Diego. As a company, we are most proud of our quality in the finished product and treatment of our clients. Throughout the building process, we advise the client on what we would recommend based on our experience. When were near completion of the project, we meet the client for an in-depth walkthrough to make sure they are completely satisfied with the work by the end of the project? As a small business, we appreciate how our past clients go out of their way to refer us to their friends and family. We also enjoy meeting new clients at the periodic home shows downtown and in Del Mar.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
As a society, I think that we are continuing to make strides to progress female leadership in the workplace. In the construction industry, we are beginning to see more female professionals as designers, architects, engineers and even working in the field. For a long time, women in the workplace had significant barriers holding them back from excelling in their career fields, mostly because it was not a social norm to have women in high leadership positions. Today, in all industries, I think we are starting to see more equality between female and male leadership across the board. More specifically for construction, we are seeing more women in the industry, which I think brings a new perspective the industry needs.
