Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayo Oyekan.
Tayo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in film began when I was around 13. Late one night, I caught a showing of “Clerks” on TV. I was intrigued by its low-budget nature, it was the first time I connect that I could be also making a film and that filmmaking wasn’t reserved for those with big budgets or special effects. Before “Clerks” I had an interest in creative writing that extended only to short stories, after Clerks I began screenwriting. My subjects of choice were always horror and the unusual, so when I began screenwriting then directing when I entered college my themes reflected that. Photography began as a hobby for me in college and grew into sort of a side project of mine as I grew to enjoy the images I could create. I self-develop and scan all my images, so its the process that keeps me going.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, before film, I was an NROTC midshipman attending USD on scholarship. So dropping out and returning to school for the film was quite a difficult process.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tayo Oyekan – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a freelance photographer and videographer. The films I make are often dark and deal with taboo subjects. My last film “Kink” was about a necrophiliac that falls in love with a young girl, then plots to kill her when he discovers he’s unable to consummate with a living girl. Concerning my photography, I’m a portrait photographer. My photos often feature a tinted color palette and often if not always shot of film.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to continue my photography efforts, right now I’m looking for minority and male models to add to my portfolio of work. I want to direct more of the horror genre in the future either for TV or Film, right now I’m entering my latest film “Kink” into festivals.
