Today we’d like to introduce you to Posse Cafe.
Posse Cafe, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
We formed Posse Cafe the summer of 2012 in Balboa Park, starting with two members – Rueben and I (Ana Maria) playing acoustic sets of songs we grew up listening to. We chose oldies as cover songs and Spanish folk tunes to honor our Mexican-American culture and roots. Our name, Posse = group and Cafe= brown (in Spanish), is also a representation of our cultural identity.
Our band grew as we joined forces with our good friends Deni Cook (drums) and Richard Cummings (bass) which complimented our guitar and keys duo. Musically influenced by funk, soul, and oldies, we fuse Spanish ballads and barrio souldies to honor those that inspired us to sing like Smokey Robinson, The Platters, Prince, Selena, Brenton Wood, Juan Gabriel, and the Delfonics.
Our hope is to give people a musical outlet away from the daily stressors of life and to enrich their experience by identifying with our music’s melody and message.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Although we are a good time band, through our music and art we bring to the forefront our cultural awareness and respect for our community. Rueben and I are multi-media artists who also participate in local art shows. We hope our music touches people’s souls and speaks to them in a way only good music can.
Richard (bass)
Deni (drums)
Rueben (guitar and vocals)
Ana Maria (keys and vocals)
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Our advice to artists of any medium is to give into their craft wholeheartedly. It’s easy to buy into what the entertainment and music industry define as “success.” However, the feeling of success can truly come from simply taking a risk and doing the thing you never thought you could do… such as sketching, writing poetry, or singing a song. Putting your heart into something and putting aside your fears is REAL success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
We perform next at the Manhattan Bar, on Saturday July 21st. 2018!
