Today we’d like to introduce you to David Kuhr.
David, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My Uncle Cass was an art teacher and calligrapher. Every year for Christmas he would send out cards with incredible calligraphy for the addresses. My Mom saved every one of these envelopes and none of them resemble the next and we’re talking 45 years of envelopes. Now, at every Christmas, we hang them around the house. He was the inspiration.
My sister, Jennifer, bought me a calligraphy set one year and I just kept practicing constantly. In a few years, I started doing friends wedding invites as their wedding gift. Soon after it became a full-blown business.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I do calligraphy. The word calligraphy actually means “beautiful writing”. So I am always interested in looking at different fonts in advertising and seeing if I can incorporate any of these aspects into my work. As well as doing traditional lettering I like to create my own alphabets
I work mostly on wedding invitations, place cards, etc. But more recently I’ve been asked to do Chalkboards or sandwich boards for restaurants and stores. I like the change in pace and it presents some interesting challenges from time to time.
I also get requests to do poems, certificates, song lyrics, and quotes. I’ve worked on footballs, mirrors, jeans and rocks.
My hope for weddings is that people understand that the couple took the time and money to make these invitations personal by having them handwritten. It’s the first contact the guests are going to get and it gives an instant feel of the what wedding is going to be.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for me is the smile customers make once the work is complete. I like to bring a little joy for everyone I work for.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can visit a few restaurants where my work is on display: Piknic at Century City, Monsieur Marcel at the original Farmer’s Market and Judi’s in Beverly Hills.
They can best support my work by encouraging friends to hire me. 😉
