Meet Christina Corcoran of Christina Corcoran Films in North Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Corcoran.

Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to San Diego for film school back in 2013 and have been working hard ever since. From writing coverage at Alcon Entertainment to filming the pilot for a web series I wrote, I have been happily pursuing my dream of being a writer, director and producer.

However, there have been many difficult times and I considered returning to my home in Washington many times. What has kept me going through the financial challenges and closed doors is the fact that I have been so lucky to work with incredible talent in San Diego including Caroline Amiguet, Aiden Keltner, Shane P. Allen, Waverly Fremgen and John Hansen to name a few. The creative community in San Diego is so nurturing, inspiring and has revived my time and again.

So far, I have written a 60 minute pilot with my fiance, Patrick Mercaldo, titled Dark Circus; a romantic comedy, Heart Burn, about a pyromaniac who falls for a girl who is afraid of fire (filmed the pilot here in Mira Mesa San Diego); a thriller titled You Have Arrived about a killer who hacks GPS devices to lead his victims to remote locations (entered into ScreenCraft’s horror competition), and a historical drama titled Romana about the daughter of a wealthy patrician in the 2nd century of the Roman Empire who risks her life to protect her Christian nurse.

The HeartBurn pilot has thus far become a semifinalist in two festivals and pending in festivals all over the world. I’m so grateful to Caroline, Patrick, Louis Rubera and so many filmmaker collaborators and friends who are making this journey for me simply incredible. All I want to do is create. <3

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey to San Diego has been such a privilege, but not always smooth! I remember at one point driving to work, not eating all day because I had no money, and almost sleeping in my car because I didn’t have gas money to get back home. I once wrapped a hairband around my flip-flop because it broke and I didn’t have money for shoes.

In film school, I remember professors laughing at my dramatic pieces and promising to read pieces if we actually finished a project and put it on their desk. I can’t count the number of breakdowns I had in the privacy of my little silver Honda accord. I gave up and quit so many times that I finally gave up on quitting, and am still here.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Christina Corcoran Films story. Tell us more about the business.
I am not sure what sets me apart from others, except that all ideas are different, and I have many different ideas. I think that I do see the world in a unique way. I think many people do. I remember my sister saying that I had the most interesting view of life than anyone she has ever met. I don’t see it, because it’s my view and I don’t know anything different.

But I have always been driven towards diversity– towards understanding the world in as many ways as possible, and I hope my stories and the genres they encompass reflect that desire to understand as much as I can about the world.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Oh my goodness. Definitely lucky with the people I have met. As I mentioned, Caroline, Shane, John, Waverly and many others. But also my fiance Patrick is the most incredible artist. He sees the world with such fire and depth and a penetrating wisdom (and some jadedness as well– to get all the textures of perspective) and he really has grown me as a craftsman/craftswoman of story. Very lucky with that.

Not so lucky with my economic background, but very few people are, and to some, I would appear lucky, so I don’t know if I can claim bad luck.
