Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Hix.
Jordan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I didn’t have things very easy. But I always looked forward to having my mom braid my hair. In the tiniest braids, with the little vibrant colored elastics. I remember it took her forever but I loved them and couldn’t wait to show them off to everyone in my school.
When I was 16 in high school, a program was offered where we could go to Beauty college while we went to high school. It was also at a very low cost. I figured I could never afford college and wasn’t really sure what my niche was so I gave it a go.
After two years of going to high school in the mornings, beauty school in the evenings and then working part-time at the mall, I eventually graduated from Beauty college. Before I had graduated high school, I was finished with my college and I was a licensed cosmetologist.
Shortly after that, I married my husband and moved to San Diego from Washington. I started out working for a salon in Rancho Bernardo which ended in a disaster. Feeling discouraged, I just figured I’d put hair on hold and stay out of the Beauty industry. After a few months off, I began to work as a barista again. But I got bored. I wanted more. I wanted challenges. Which is when I reached out to my current boss and she spur of the moment had an opening. Which quickly led to full time as a receptionist, and then, I began offering my hair services and now I’m also the manager. For now, I’ve found my home at Beauty By Hannah Lebron and I’m so excited to continue to grow within my career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth having comes easy. So, I’ve learned. It surely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being in the beauty industry you, of course, have to deal with other women who are reaching for a goal similar to yours. But in any industry, you will have competitors and then you will have boss babes who are destined to become your tribe. Find those people. Help them build their empire and they will help you. Be patient with the process. You are your own limit.
What should we know about Styled By Jordan? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in hairstyling for special occasions. Proms, military balls, and my favorite… weddings. Being a small part of someone’s very special day is inspiring. I love that I can make a connection with each client I have in my chair. I always strive to create a bond with the people I meet and I think of them as friends more than anything. I’ve found my passion in styling, therefore,e I only offer updos, down do’s curls, braids, etc.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Find someone who inspires you. Someone you have similarities with when it comes to your industry. Get out of your comfort zone. Talk to people, tell them what you do and be proud of it. Check out local networking events. Business Babes is one of my personal favorites. Show up for yourself in everything you do.
