Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Gonzalez.
Bethany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my hair journey while I was still in high school. I was the girl everyone would go to chop off and color their hair. After graduation, I enrolled in a beauty school to get my license and take my love for hair even further. I started to notice early in my career that I enjoyed styling hair more than I liked cutting it. Styling was way more fun to me, it allowed me to show my creative side and that excited me. I worked at many styling bars, picking up tricks, expanding my knowledge and learning what styles I enjoyed. I love bridal hair because I feel honored to be apart someones special day, I get to be apart of the magic that makes weddings so beautiful! Seeing the bride smile and say they feel beautiful is what makes me feel so passionate about what I do! It’s been 8 years and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Early on in my career, I really struggled because I felt like I wasn’t sure I picked the right career. Doing color and cuts all day exhausted me and I wasn’t content at the end of the day. I hopped around, salon to salon until I finally found my niche.
I also learned the hard way that it takes time and LOTS of practice to strengthen your craft, so don’t ever think you’ve learned enough. I always recommend taking more classes, watching videos and practicing on people with different hair types!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Babe Hair by B story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in bridal hair, so I get to help doll the bride up. I think I’m well known for my boho braids and loose waves. It’s my go-to style for everyone because it looks effortless and natural but still romantic enough for your wedding day.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I actually subscribe to a lot of online education like hairandmakeupbysteph and Heather Chapman hair. I love watching hair tutorials and learning new tips and tricks.
I feel like most hairstylists are visual learners, so watching hair tutorials & going to updo classes help so much & inspire us to create more intricate styles for our brides!
