Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Keck.
Kasey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I always knew I wanted to do something outside of the norm. While everyone around me was doing college visits and planning careers in well know industries, I wasn’t, nothing stood out to me. After graduating I did go to college with the intent of becoming a teacher like the rest of my friends however, I only lasted a year knowing full well that wasn’t at all what I wanted to do. Over the course of 7 years before I had my kids I did a wide variety of jobs, but one thing was constant, they all revolved around helping others. Growing up in a small town in Central California, I had no idea how many different avenues there were to becoming successful. It wasn’t until moving down to San Diego 3 years ago did I see there were SO many things I could do to help others and realized that just because you don’t fit the cookie-cutter mold of what is expected, doesn’t mean that you don’t still having something amazing to offer! I never knew that I could create my own path, make my own hours, be home with my kids when needed, and do it all my way. As I started researching different avenues I came across Scalp Micropigmentation. Reading the testimonies of so many people who’s confidence had been restored thanks to this procedure was all I needed to give me the little push to start my own business in this amazing industry!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes and no. As far as learning the art of Scalp Micropigmentation, it came pretty naturally to me. I loved learning and was so excited and passionate about what this procedure could do for others that it drove me to putting everything I had to get the business off the ground. The logistics of starting something like this was completely different. I have ZERO background in business, nor had I been apart of the industry. Jumping through all the hoops and teaching myself how to legally have everything needed to provide a safe and healthy environment for my clients was difficult. Since opening, the growth in cliental has been very organic which is what I’d hoped for. Scalp Micropigmentation is a relatively new procedure, most people have never heard of it and have no idea how it can help them. My biggest challenge thus far has just been getting the word out. However, I have been very humbled by some opportunities that have come my way and am excited for future growth! My advice to young woman just starting out would be not to limit yourself to the expectations have been placed on you. It’s a great big world out there, something is calling your name and you are going to be great at it!! You may not know what that is right away, be patient, keep your eyes open, take action, try things, and believe in yourself!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with North County Scalp Micropigmentation – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Scalp Micropigmentation is the process of using pigment to replicate follicle sized impressions in the scalp creating the illusion of having more hair than you actually do. It’s a great option in helping people suffering from alopecia, genetic balding, those with unwanted scalp scars, or adding density to thinning hair or previous hair transplants. Scalp Micropigmentation is a fraction of the cost of many other hair restoration procedures out there, and offers immediate results with no down time! Over the course of 3 sessions we work together to achieve the outcome the client is looking for. All of our inks are charcoal based so there is no need to worry about the pigment turning unnatural colors such as blue or green. The needles used are specifically designed to replicate a hair follicle leaving you with undetectable, natural results. Seeing the look on clients faces for the first time at a reveal is something that never gets old. Most people come in with all hope lost, having something to offer them is so rewarding. Hair loss is such an incredibly sensitive subject for both men and women which makes me so happy and proud to be able to offer a procedure that truly changes the way people feel about themselves instantly!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
When I set out on this venture I knew I had a lot to learn. Initially I reached out to a local artist to see if she would be willing to allow me to shadow her and find out more about the industry. Once I made the decision to pursue SMP it became more about the business. I listened to endless hours of podcasts on how to start a businesss, customer service, finding balance, you name it! They became my mentors. If there was useful information, I listened. Now that I’m up and running I find Instagram is my best resource. Having the ability to research artists and be able to contact them directly has been extreamly helpful!!
