Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennie Hamilton of the Community Actors Theatre which was founded in 1982 and was incorporated in 1984 in San Diego.
Jennie, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. It all began when we applied for our 501 (c) 3 non-profit status. It was a lot of back and forth work and stress, but we didn’t give up. We didn’t have a venue, so our meetings, auditions, and rehearsals were all done in homes, garages, or at ECC. Performances during our first 5-6 years, were done at Boys & Girls Clubs, ECC, Sax Bottle & Beef, etc.
Please tell us about the Community Actors Theatre.
We are a community theatre that conducts 6-7 productions a year, two children/youth productions a year, acting workshops for children/youth and adults, “Open Mic” once a month, perform at Chollas Lake Park May-August on the 3rd Saturday of the month, etc.
We are most proud of what we’ve accomplished, through our stress and struggles, we never gave up. The thing that sets us apart from others is that we are the only known Black Theatre in San Diego, CA who has their very own venue.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is, enjoying my Grandma’s good cooking and chasing her chickens around in her yard.
