Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Allais.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a Venezuelan French Visual Artist. I spend my time between LA, NYC, and Barcelona. I grew up in Venezuela and studied graphic design. My career started in Barcelona when I was invited to participate in the 2004 edition of Sonar Electrónic music festival Djing and creating visuals for musicians such as Prefuse 73, Kid Koala, De la Soul, Madlib and many more. Since I´ve been working in the moving image realms vjing and directing commercials and music videos. Recently alongside Maud Beckers, we founded BRUT, a collective of animation directors, we are represented by 1stavemachine in L.A and NYC.
Please tell us about your art.
I´m a mixed media artist. I´m very interested in combining techniques and juxtapositioning messages to create new aesthetic spaces. I like to approach every project as a different entity. I´m not particularly interested in repeating myself or being true to an ideal that I repeat over and over.
My most recent piece is called Battlestar, a VR animated mini-series set in the late 70s in NYC about two girls trying to form a punk band. It’s my first experience with this medium and its endless possibilities. The first episode is currently on a festival run from Sundance to Venice. We´re so delighted to have been awarded in 6 of the festivals, plus an Annie nomination for best Virtual Reality production. Its been a very exciting and unexpected journey as it differs immensity from my previous work.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
In my opinion social media. As much as it encourages exposure, it’s so immediate that the period of reflection is almost reduced to nothing. This ultimately affects the work and makes a cacophony of styles and messages. Is really difficult to keep your identity with all the noise.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is almost entirely digital so you can see it in my Vimeo page, Instagram and personal website….also hopefully soon in Oculus and HTC store.
