Meet Blanca Lucia Bergman of Art Unites in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blanca Lucia Bergman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Art Unites began as a one-time event titled “Art Unites.” My event goals were to promote a message of “respect for all” given the hostile social climate following the 2016 United States presidential election and donate proceeds to a local music program for children. Art Unites rapidly developed into a dynamic resource for San Diego artists and art supporters. Today, Art Unites is a San Diego for-profit company with four divisions – Art Unites Entertainment, Art Unites Bazaar, Art Unites Services, and Art Unites Gallery; executives, marketers, ambassadors, and consultants; and over fifty community partners.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a smooth, enlightening, and rewarding road overall, with a few obstacles that served as valuable lessons learned.

Please tell us about Art Unites.
Art Unites is similar to other art organizations in terms of core values, such as a profound regard for community. What sets us apart is our three-fold mission: 1) Unite artists from diverse backgrounds, art disciplines, and levels of experience with fellow artists and art supporters, 2) Provide artists with meaningful and professionally rewarding opportunities, and 3) Provide the San Diego community with quality products and services created, redesigned, procured, or curated by San Diego artists.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would not use the complicated organizational structure and strategies I applied to Art Unites early on.

I’m grateful for the business knowledge I gained by working at large technology and biotechnology companies for 10+ years and now I know: some large-business strategies apply to small businesses – others are best suited for large businesses.
