Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Maund.
Claire, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been athletic all my life, mostly with extreme skiing in the Rocky Mountains, and ballet and hip hop dance in San Diego. My first job was with a chemical company. My second was in electronics. I never planned to work in fitness until I moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands for 12 years. Not finding a gym I liked, I found a space to rent at the Amsterdam airport, and started Fitness 92 Club (the name was inspired by the union of 12 countries to form the European Union in 1992) which offered cardio and strength classes to airline and control tower personnel. I was written up in the KLM Airline magazine, and my business grew.
Upon my return to San Diego, I discovered Pilates. I got certified and opened my studio 11 years ago. I am amazed in new ways each day at how it changes bodies and rehabilitates injuries.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The fitness business is a competitive one. I have had to learn the ins and outs of social media, which sometimes is baffling and elusive.
There was a time when it was challenging to train 3 people with different body sizes and conditioning and satisfy everyone. But after doing this for so long, it has become second nature to create a high energy synergistic feel in every class.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in high energy, fun, but effective workouts. We are a boutique core training studio. My passion is to assist people get stronger, build a better core, and stay healthy as they age. With a max of 3 clients at any time, we utilize Pilates Reformers, TRX, BOSU, and foam rollers to improve core strength and flexibility. Due to the small class size, every client gets a personalized workout designed around their fitness goals and history of injuries.
