Today we’d like to introduce you to Marne Moore.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Fro Yo By The Sea was founded in 2016 by mom, Marne and teenage daughter, Lexi. After a year-long journey of designing and building our mobile food service van, we hit the streets in summer of 2017. Backing up a few years… I was a music industry professional, working in Los Angeles but living in San Diego and commuting several days a week. The commuting grind and being away from my young daughter began to foster ideas of how I could do something I love, spend time with my daughter and give back to my community and Fro Yo By The Sea began to evolve. Most of our business is doing special events but when we are not committed to an event, we can be found serving curbside in the beach communities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From concept to launch was several years. The design and build took about a year. Initially, I was given a few referrals for companies to build out the van based on a design I created. The first company, San Diego Van Conversions was booked out for about a year so I tried the 2nd choice. They strung me along for a while without performing much work and what was done was wrong and eventually had to be redone. I called back San Diego Van Conversions, explained my situation and they took me in and put their lead builder, Stuart on my van. He did a such great work and threw in some amazing, extra details. When COVID hit, all of my events were canceled but since we are a food truck, we have been able to remain operational. We have been serving families in their neighborhoods which has been a lot of fun. Many families have been sheltered in place for many months and to have a frozen dessert truck come to their neighborhood has been a real treat.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fro Yo By The Sea – what should we know?
Our specialty is serving special events; Corporate parties, weddings, birthday parties, school and sports fundraisers, large scale sporting events. We are known for serving frozen desserts, using premium ingredients and locally sourced products. We serve fresh, acai bowls using San Diego based, The Roots acai. Our frozen yogurt is a Temecula based brand, Miss Karen’s. For our guests with dietary restrictions, we always have non-dairy and gluten-free selections available. We feature specials which include root beer floats, homemade cookie ice cream sandwiches and Dole whip. I’m most proud of being a local (raised in Encinitas), woman-owned/operated business and that my partner is my teenage daughter. Our concept and menu is unique to our community and we do a lot to support our local organizations by sponsoring sports teams, helping our local schools raise funds, and feeding our local homeless and underserved community through various non-profits.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Our customer base consists mainly of kids and kids at heart. Sharing our love of frozen desserts and seeing the smiling faces of our customers has helped us weather storms and our strength and perseverance will get us through a global pandemic. We look forward to getting back to our special events in the near future.
