Daily Inspiration: Meet Julie Vu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Vu.

Hi Julie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started drawing digitally in 2020 during the pandemic. It started off as doodles on my phone and drawing portraits for friends and family to make a bit of extra cash. Then, as more and more people kept inquiring about my illustrations, I decided to make an Instagram account dedicated to my art, and that’s when I started to gain a bit more traction.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a struggle since I never knew or thought that it could ever become a full-time job. I didn’t know that there was a market for art, much less think that people would be interested in something I created. It was hard to navigate both the creative and business side of it since it’s not always as simple as posting my work on social media. There’s so much more behind-the-scenes work of building it into a business and turning it from a hobby into a job. I’m still learning and making mistakes along the way, but I’m generally just happy that I get to create art on a regular basis.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a freelance artist. I specialize in digital illustrations, and most of my art is centered around storytelling. I want to create and capture moments and emotions.

I love drawing custom commissions for my clients, whether or not it’s recreating a family photo or creating new and exciting characters. I also have a Patreon where I have art tutorials and hope to help others with their artistic journey/ navigating the business. More recently, I opened up a shop where I sell merchandise such as stickers and prints.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being aware that not everything you create is going to turn out perfect. I try really hard not to be too critical of myself and strive to do better and learn from my mistakes.
