Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristyn Harvey.
Hi Kristyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Kristyn Harvey Interiors was born from a love of family togetherness and a desire to reduce the friction in daily life. I grew up in a very unconventional apartment building in Bangkok, Thailand. It consisted multiple corridors which eventually led to bedrooms and common spaces. Only when it came to renovating my first home did I realize how the flow and feel of a room impacts how people interact with one another.
I spent my 20s and early 30s as a surgical and neurosciences intensive care nurse. After having my two children, I felt lost personally and professionally. Nursing no longer filled me with joy but renovating our own house did, so I decided to combine my knowledge of healthcare with my passion for design. My philosophy is to compose efficient home spaces that also feel like a breath of fresh air; spaces that reduce the number of steps it takes to get things done, allowing you to devote time to your passions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It took me about a year to finally have enough confidence in my designs to want to show them to the world. I dabbled in interior design part-time while also working as a surgical intensive care nurse at night and being home with the kids during the day. There were days that I would sleep for a total of an hour or two while my kids slept and just keep powering through. Learning which clients are the right fit has also been a challenge, the design and renovation process tends to be months to years long so finding the right client to designer fit can be challenging.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Kristyn Harvey Interiors is a full-service residential design firm specializing in home renovations and furnishings. We are your eyes, ears, and hands during the entire renovation process. We aid in challenges ranging from creation of design plans, curation of reliable design-build teams, and space planning, all the way to custom furniture design. We believe in the importance of having a space that embodies who you are and focus on creating intuitive interiors. We are known for light-filled rooms, warm natural textures, and a love for vintage furniture. We take great pride in incorporating your family heirlooms and children’s art in a modern way.
We like to work with seasoned professional families. Families that are full of love but lack the time it takes to design a home that functions well for them. We understand your life and are there with you! The goal is to get to know these families, down to who takes longest in the bathroom, what activities the kids are involved in, and all the different schedules in the family. This informs how we design the flow of the house, what type of storage we include, the types of handles, knobs, etc. that would make it easier for the littles to make breakfast for themselves. My background as a nurse also helps me identify modifications that would make a home easier to navigate for a person with disabilities (I specialized in stroke care, trauma such as car accidents and brain injuries).
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Put your dreams and goals out there and you will be surprised what work/life connections you make and how generous others are with their knowledge and time.
