Daily Inspiration: Meet Lisa Slovis Mandel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Slovis Mandel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started making jewelry as a kid in Michigan and knew that is what I wanted to do. I got my BFA in Metalsmithing from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1995 and then came out to San Diego to pursue a MFA in Metalsmithing that I received in 1998. Now 23 years later- I am married with two teenage boys teaching at two colleges, creating custom jewelry, objects for the home and sculpture. My husband David has his Masters in Architecture along with a General contractors License and together we create architectural detailing (fences, gates, sculptural forms) and have completed several public art pieces and are seeking to do many more. We seek to create “Jewelry for the neighborhood“- utilizing our sense of design and detail on a grander scale -creating jewelry for you to wear, look at and interact with in your homes. I have a passion for creating and enjoy teaching others to love the craft.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Juggling work and family has not always been easy. I traveled across the country doing 14 trade shows a year with an infant with my oldest. Then in 2008 the market crashed, shows and traveling got more expensive and we had two kids to juggle- teaching started to become more dominant than the shows to accommodate my schedules. Life is definitely a juggling act.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My company is Lisa Slovis Metalsmithing, which creates a line of Jewelry, custom housewares, and sculpture out of metal: silver, gold, platinum, titanium, steel, and pewter. My husband and I together are Cogent Builders. He is a full-scale General Contractor, but together, we can add the creative excitement to your project. We create unique metalwork for all needs: fences, gates, signage, furniture, and sculpture. We have created sculptures on a larger scale for private collections and publicly in Vista, Encinitas, and San Diego. We would love to get more of these public projects. We are a husband and wife team that truly love to create artwork to surround us- we believe that we should have inspiring objects everywhere- that everything you utilize should pay attention to the shape and form. We want people to notice the little things and the big things around them!

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
That is a hard question- I had a good childhood with a family that loved me. I am the youngest of four kids and we had a lot of adventures. I played a lot of sports growing up and still try to be active with my family. My dad was a physician who loved helping people and he truly loved going to work. He told my siblings and me that we need to find what we love to do so that work is fun, that you feel challenged. I chose metalwork and creating things because that is what makes me happy and inspired and when I teach others- I feel their excitement. My mom is trained as a social worker but has had her hand in many different aspects of that. Although she does not think of herself as being an artist, she is definitely creative. She was the mom that would have us make our Halloween costumes, that instead of throwing out the screen door, had us splatter painting with it, and she was the one who when I decided I wanted to make jewelry and asked her to go buy metal with me- she said sure! Little did she know where that would go!
