Exploring Life & Business with Kelly Zijlstra of Kelly Z Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Zijlstra.

Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I like to think that my love of design, color and nature came from my experiences growing up….as a young girl living in the middle of Africa and traveling throughout Europe, then settling down in Hawaii after high school for 12 years, I learned to adapt to situations and become familiar with various cultures, the life lessons that have stayed with me are deep-rooted and part of what makes me who I am today.

Creativity has always been a part of my life, from teaching art to children, then as a self-taught metalsmith creating a body of unique jewelry designs, I now paint abstract work in my studio and am so in love with the process of layers of paint as well as mixed media inspired by nature and expressed freely onto the canvas, wood or paper.

With that said, I came upon real estate as a bit of an unplanned career, I never considered myself a ‘sales’ kind of person however, because I had my own business staging homes for many years, I was familiar with the real estate world, so when my Mum decided she wanted to sell our family home, I decided to help her by getting my real estate license and sell if for her!

Well, before I could sell that home, another friend asked me to help them purchase their first home. Let me tell you, I had no idea it would change the direction of my life. Being a part of such a huge step in people’s lives, whether it is buying a home or selling and moving on, the process is so important and special. When I can make it as seamless and stress-free and have ongoing, open communication to share each step of the way to help my clients, who incidentally become my friends, and have them come out feeling positive about the experience, it is the most rewarding feeling!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, real estate has its ups and downs, and we can’t control the market, so there is the element of unpredictability, but overall, thanks to my awesome clients and friends, I am referred to new clients and am always happy to have anyone reach out for questions, assistance or anything at all! I love to chat about the market and see how I can help people achieve their dreams!

Sometimes the balance of work and art is a tough one to achieve, I would say I work more in real estate than art these days, but I am working on a new series of paintings in my spare time as it helps me to relax and take some time to slow down.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As focused listener, able advisor and fair advocate, I utilize intuition and diligence while employing encouragement and genuine concern to create a positive experience for both sides in any property transaction. My business approach is direct and successful; with an honest and open approach, I listen to my client’s story, their wants and needs, and then work hard to match them to the right property &/or share my successful, unique marketing methods of selling a property. In whatever capacity I am helping, I can assure an honest and efficient transaction with ongoing communication and a little humor thrown in just naturally!

I like to consider & call myself a ‘Dream Facilitator’, as my goal in working with my clients, whether Selling or Buying…is to make their dreams become a reality!

What were you like growing up?
Creative, curious and funny. I loved to roller skate as a teen and spent my summers roller skating all along the boardwalks of Venice Beach and surrounding areas, I realize that makes me seem kind of old, however, roller skating is back in style now, so maybe it makes me kind of cool too!
