Exploring Life & Business with Tatiana and Jacquelene of Detour Clothing Brand

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana and Jacquelene.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Detour Clothing Brand was started by lifelong best friends, Tatiana and Jacquelene. Starting a clothing line had been a shared childhood dream for both of us. We have always had a deep “passion for fashion” and knew we wanted to eventually explore that avenue in our lives. We both moved to San Diego, Ca after College for a change in scenery and to advance our corporate careers. However, we quickly came to realize that neither one of us enjoyed the redundancy of the corporate world and found ourselves craving a more artistic outlet to fulfill our creative sides. We frequently talked about our childhood dreams of starting our own clothing line and decided the time was now or never to make that dream a reality. We quit our jobs and fully immersed ourselves in learning how to create, manage and maintain a small business in California. We funded our entire business with our own personal finances, even though we were both newly unemployed. This was not an easy task, but we were dedicated and determined! Once we got all the basics and legalities covered, it was time to dive into the fun part…creating our brand! We sourced all of our apparel and materials locally (from all across California). We met with each and every one of our apparel distributors personally so we could feel and see each piece of clothing before we decided on moving forward. We met with local experienced embroiderers, screen-printers, and graphic designers to learn the trade and gain the skills & knowledge to become experts ourselves. We launched our business in August 2017 and are still going strong today!! We design every piece we make, from our handcrafted denim jackets to our ever-popular graphic t-shirts. Detour has evolved into so much more than just a brand, it’s become a lifestyle. As our mission statement says: Detour is about not being afraid to follow your own path. It’s deviating from the norm and taking the unexpected route. It’s enjoying the view and really taking it all in. It’s understanding that things may not go as planned at that exact moment, in that exact time. It’s veering off track sometimes but still finding your way to your desired destination. It’s remembering this is YOUR journey, YOUR adventure. Don’t be afraid to take a detour, find the scenic route, and enjoy the ride!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every business has its obstacles and challenges, especially a new business. Even more so a business made up of just two people!!! Like many other small businesses, we ran into your normal bumps in the road in the beginning but as we mentioned before, this was our dream and we weren’t going to let anything slow us down!! We moved with the ebb and flow as needed and adjusted to whatever obstacle or challenge was thrown our way. We welcomed the challenges and tried to use every obstacle as a learning experience. Fast forward to 2020, our 3rd year in business when we were all hit by the global pandemic. COVID 19 impacted so many businesses, including ours. The global supply chain significantly slowed down; it was almost impossible to get our materials. Our customers were losing their jobs so spending money on new clothes was no longer an option. Public events were brought to an immediate halt so we were no longer able to host pop-up shops or set up at the local markets to sell to our loyal customers. On top of that, as a Nation we were experiencing one social injustice tragedy after another. The World was in a constant state of despair. We decided to pause the production of any new releases and focus solely on trying to help the best way we knew how…we started creating. We switched gears, dusted off our sewing machines and got to work. We used our materials and supplies to hand-make and produce hundreds of masks for our local homeless community. We donated almost all of our inventory of blank apparel to families in need of clothing. We created multiple graphic t-shirts and hats that brought light to the social injustices our Country was experiencing. We used our platform on social media to stand in solidarity and support with those affected by said tragedies. We tried our best to do our part and take action the best way we knew how. So to answer your question, there have absolutely been some struggles along the way but we have made the best of every moment and have found a way to stay true to our brand and true to ourselves throughout it all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We specialize in streetwear but for all intents and purposes we will say we sell custom-designed affordable apparel. This includes graphic tees, sweatshirts, joggers, hats, beanies, jackets & more! Our rule is, we will never sell something that we will not wear ourselves! Our brand identity is a reflection of the two of us and our different personalities so it’s important to us to keep that image consistent. We express ourselves through our many different designs. Both of our personal styles differ greatly but still somehow seem to mesh with the other. Jacquelene’s style is simple but modern and chic. Whereas Tatiana likes to wear bold patterns and take fashion risks. But, both of us prefer to be comfortably stylish if that makes sense! We use both of our styles collectively with everything we design. We create, design, and QC every item ourselves to make sure each piece is up to our personal standards. We took special care to make sure we are using the softest material for our apparel so all of our wearers are comfortable. We make sure our prices are affordable, we want you ALL to be able to purchase our clothes! Most of our clothing is unisex, we believe you should wear whatever makes you comfortable. Our sizes range from XS to 4X, we try our best to be as inclusive as possible. If we don’t have your size, you can always contact us and we will work with you to get you in some Detour! We truly appreciate each and every one of our customers. If you want to be featured on our Instagram page, upload a photo of you rocking your Detour and use #DetourCam.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
We are big fans of Deepak Chopra and Rumi around here but honestly, we’d say read everything…as often as you can. There are few things in life that compare to getting lost in a great read! We truly think it’s important to unplug from all the craziness around you and try to find your peace. Both of us meditate daily and recommend trying it if you haven’t already. Find your peace in this chaotic world and practice being present in each moment. The energy you put into yourself is a direct reflection of the energy you are able to put into others, so make it count! We like to say “Protect Your Energy”. We live by this saying, so much so we put it on a shirt and it has now become one of our most popular graphic tees!
